Ash Sawn Lamella: Stock Program

We understand that business efficiency depends on the speed of order fulfillment, which is why we maintain a constant stock of sawn veneer with standard sizes. You can order lamella with the following specifications:

  • Thickness: 2.5 mm (0.098 inches) and 4.5 mm (0.18 inches).
  • Width: 10 to 21 cm (3.94 – 8.27 inches).
  • Length: 0.5 to 3.5 m (19.69 – 137.8 inches).

Please note that exact package parameters may vary by batch. A manager will provide information on the actual dimensions of our in-stock materials.

Custom Ash Lamella Production

We adapt to our clients’ needs and offer custom-made sawn veneer. The following lumber is available for custom orders:

  • Thickness: 2 to 10 mm (0.078 – 0.39 inches).
  • Width: 10 to 21 cm (3.94 – 8.27 inches).
  • Length: 0.3 to 3.5 m (11.81 – 137.8 inches).

The minimum order volume for custom production is one pallet of a single grade.

What is Sawn Veneer?

Sawn veneer, also known as lamella, is a sheet material made by sawing dried boards into thin plates (sheets). Unlike other types of veneer, lamella is significantly thicker. To appreciate the unique features of sawn lamella, it’s important to understand the technological differences from other veneer types. So, let’s explore the characteristics of this lumber.

  • Sliced Veneer: Produced by slicing. Knives cut thin sheets of solid wood at different angles from steamed planks. The heat treatment changes the wood’s natural shade. This technology allows for different textures (tangential, radial, semi-radial) but with a slightly altered color.
  • Rotary-Cut Veneer: This is the most economical wood processing method. A log, cleaned of bark, is rotated around its axis while a long knife cuts a continuous ribbon of wood. The process resembles unrolling a paper towel or sharpening a pencil. Rotary cutting results in a sheet with an unnatural, wavy grain pattern that differs from solid wood texture.
  • Sawn Veneer: Produced by longitudinally sawing kiln-dried boards that have not been steamed or boiled beforehand. The technology is considered more expensive but results in a material that most accurately replicates the texture and color of solid wood.

Key Benefits of Ash Sawn Lamella

Using ash sawn veneer is an investment in product quality, durability, and aesthetics. This lumber is a top choice for producing interior items due to its unique features:

  1. Stability: The sufficient thickness and preserved fiber structure make the material resistant to mechanical damage, chipping, and indoor temperature and humidity fluctuations. This lumber is used for facing surfaces that endure heavy use (countertops, stairs, floors, doors).
  2. Authentic Look: Products faced with ash veneer are visually and tactilely indistinguishable from those made from solid wood, while the cost and processing complexity of the faced alternatives are significantly lower.
  3. Finishing Versatility: The veneer surface can be easily sanded, stained, polished, and coated with lacquer or oil multiple times. This finishing versatility allows for complex design solutions and simplifies restoration.
  4. Production Efficiency: Ash lamella is easy to process with standard woodworking tools, enabling the lumber to be integrated into any production cycle.
  5. Eco-Friendly: One cubic meter of wood yields enough veneer to face dozens of products. Veneer significantly increases the efficiency of using solid wood.

How is Ash Sawn Veneer Made?

The creation of sawn veneer is a multi-stage process that requires modern equipment and strict quality control. The technology consists of these steps:

  1. Raw Material Selection: For production, we use boards without critical defects. The quality of the boards determines the quality of the final product.
  2. Kiln Drying: The selected wood is dried in special kilns to an optimal moisture level of 8–10% for woodworking. Kiln drying is an effective way to uniformly dry the wood and create a stable base for the lamella.
  3. Sizing: Dry boards are planed and sized for thickness and width to fit the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing: The prepared boards are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the sawing parameters, the wood is cut into lamellas of the specified thickness. Professional equipment ensures a uniform thickness and a proper shape for each sheet.
  5. Grading: The finished product is sorted by grade, stacked into packs, and then into pallets.

Ash Sawn Veneer Grading

Understanding veneer grades is key to choosing the right material, which not only helps achieve the desired aesthetic result but also allows for effective cost management. We stock ash sawn veneer in three grades for various applications.

Grade Characteristics
A Designed for projects where appearance is of primary importance. Characteristics:

Uniform texture with mostly straight grain;

Consistent color;

Only allows for single, healthy knots up to 10 mm in diameter.

B A material that combines optimal technical characteristics with a more affordable price. Suitable for woodworking products where aesthetic qualities are less critical. Characteristics:

Natural texture variation is possible;

More noticeable color changes;

Small dark knots up to 5 mm in diameter may be present.

Rustic Used for projects that emphasize the wood’s unique texture. It is the most affordable option and is suitable for products in loft, country, industrial, and other styles. Characteristics:

Pronounced texture;

Color variations;

Knots of various types are allowed (e.g., sound, with cracks, partially missing);

Minor cracks and resin pockets.

The grade of sawn veneer should be chosen based on three criteria: design, usage conditions, and cost. Grade A is for premium projects where flawless quality is essential. Grade B is the golden mean, ideal for most standard solutions. “Rustic” is the choice for bold design ideas where the natural texture and minor features of the wood become the main accent.

Characteristics of Ash Wood

Ash (Fraxinus) is a hard and durable wood that is highly valued in furniture production due to its expressive grain pattern and performance properties.

Technical Parameters

  • Density of dry wood is 660-700 kg/m³.
  • Janka hardness is 1,480 lbf, and Brinell hardness is 4.
  • Ash wood is tough and elastic.

Texture and Color

  • The wood’s palette varies from whitish to light brown. The color of the sapwood and heartwood is almost identical.
  • The texture is pronounced with large pores. Annual rings form a distinctive pattern.
  • Mature trees may develop a darker, olive-brown heartwood.

Processing Features

  • Ash is easy to cut, rout, and sand.
  • After steaming, the wood bends well, allowing for the creation of curved parts.
  • The wood takes stains, lacquers, and oils, which allows for changing the appearance of products.

Applications of Ash Sawn Veneer

Ash sawn lamella is a versatile material for facing that combines natural beauty with significant strength. This lumber is used to make various furnishings and interior finishes, including:

  • Flooring: Ash lamella is used for the top layer of engineered hardwood flooring. The material gives flooring a natural look and ensures durability.
  • Countertops: These durable wood sheets are a popular material for facing countertops for dining and writing desks, bar counters, kitchen islands, and retail counters.
  • Furniture Fronts: Sawn lamella is used to finish the doors of cabinets, dressers, and other case goods. The faced surface of the fronts is easily stained and painted, allowing for unique designs.
  • Stairs: The lumber is suitable for facing stair treads. The hard wood withstands operational loads, while coatings like lacquer and other protective agents increase the surface’s wear resistance.
  • Doors and Partitions: The material is used in the production of interior doors, partitions, and screens. Dividers made from wood sheets or lamella-faced screens help to zone spaces in studio apartments, open-plan offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels: Light-colored wood with a uniform texture can serve as a base for exclusive interior panels. The textured surface with a pronounced grain pattern fits naturally into both traditional classical and sleek modern interiors.
  • Decor: Craft artisans use ash veneer to create organizers, picture frames, candle holders, key holders, napkin holders, stationery stands, and other household items.

This decorative facing material is a popular solution in both mass production and the craft sector.
