The minimum volume for custom production is one pallet of a single grade.

Beech Sawn Veneer: Production Technology and Key Advantages

Sawn veneer, also known as lamella, is a premium sheet lumber. It is made by sawing kiln-dried boards into thin plates. Unlike other types of veneer, sawn veneer is significantly thicker—typically 2 to 10 mm (0.078–0.39″).

Three Types of Veneer: What’s the Difference?

To appreciate the uniqueness of sawn veneer, it’s important to understand the differences in veneer production technologies.

  • Sliced Veneer. Made by slicing thin layers from pre-steamed wood blocks. The thermal treatment changes the natural color of the wood. This method allows for beautiful tangential or radial textures, but with a partially altered color.
  • Rotary-Cut Veneer. The most economical method, where a prepared log (bolt) is rotated on its axis, and a long blade cuts a continuous, thin wood ribbon in a spiral. As a result, the grain pattern often looks unnaturally wavy and is significantly different from solid wood texture.
  • Sawn Veneer. Produced by sawing dry, non-steamed boards. The process is more costly, but it is this technology that allows for a material that most accurately reproduces the texture of solid wood.

Advantages of Beech Sawn Veneer for Your Production

Using beech veneer is a direct investment in the quality, reliability, and aesthetic value of your product. Sawn beech veneer offers:

  1. Stability and durability. Thanks to its thickness and preserved fiber structure, sawn veneer is resistant to mechanical damage, chipping, and fluctuations in temperature and humidity. This facing material is suitable for surfaces that endure heavy use, such as countertops, stairs, doors, and flooring.
  2. Authentic solid wood appearance. Items finished with beech veneer are visually and tactilely indistinguishable from those made of solid wood. At the same time, the cost and complexity of processing the material are significantly lower.
  3. Finishing possibilities. The veneer surface is suitable for repeated sanding, wire brushing, staining, and applying lacquer or oil. This allows for complex design solutions and, importantly, makes future restoration of the products easier.
  4. Efficiency in the production process. Beech veneer is easy to process with standard woodworking tools, allowing it to be integrated into any production cycle without the additional cost of specialized equipment.
  5. Rational use of natural resources. The technology allows for several sheets of veneer to be obtained from a single board, meaning much more product can be created from the same amount of wood.

Beech Sawn Veneer Production Technology

The creation of sawn veneer is a precise and multi-stage process that requires modern equipment and strict adherence to standards.

  1. Raw material selection. The production uses top- and first-grade boards that are free of defects that could affect the veneer’s strength.
  2. Kiln drying. The wood is dried in specialized kilns to an optimal moisture level of 8–10%. This stage is critically important for ensuring material stability.
  3. Blank calibration. Before sawing, each board is planed and calibrated for thickness and width. The blanks are sized to fit the saw cassette, ensuring precise sheet geometry and minimizing waste.
  4. Sawing. The prepared boards are fed into a Wintersteiger machine, which cuts the solid wood into veneers of the specified thickness. The use of professional equipment guarantees the correct shape and uniform thickness of each sheet.
  5. Sorting and packaging. The finished products are sorted by grade, stacked in packs, which are then used to form pallets.

Beech sawn veneer is not just a facing material; it’s a high-tech solution that combines the natural beauty of solid wood with production efficiency. Its use allows for the creation of durable, aesthetic, and competitive products.

Beech Sawn Veneer Grades

Understanding the grading of sawn veneer (lamella) is key for any manufacturer. Choosing the right material not only helps achieve the desired aesthetic result but also allows for efficient management of production costs and ensures consistent product quality.

WoodWay Expert offers beech sawn veneer in three grades, each intended for specific technical and design tasks.

Grade Characteristics
A This is the highest quality veneer, intended for projects where appearance is of primary importance. The lumber is the standard for premium furniture and exclusive interior solutions. Key characteristics:

Uniform texture, with predominantly straight grain.

Stable, uniform color.

Only single light, healthy (“live”) knots with a diameter up to 10 mm (no more than 2-3 per linear meter) are allowed.

B A versatile and popular grade that combines optimal technical characteristics with a more affordable price. It is the right choice for woodworking products where durability is a priority and texture requirements are less strict. Key characteristics:

May have natural inconsistencies in its structure.

More noticeable color variations are allowed.

The presence of small dark knots up to 5 mm in diameter is possible, provided they are sufficiently spaced from the edges and from each other.

Rustic This is the material for projects that emphasize wood texture. This veneer is the most affordable and allows for the implementation of bold design ideas in styles such as loft, industrial, country, or farmhouse. Key characteristics:

Pronounced texture.

Distinct color variations.

Knots of various types and sizes are allowed: encased, with cracks, partially fallen out, etc.

Minor cracks and resin pockets are possible.

The choice of beech veneer grade depends directly on three factors: the aesthetic requirements of the project, the technical conditions of product use, and the budget. For the highest-end projects, choose Grade A. For most standard tasks, Grade B will be the optimal solution. For creating unique designer products with an emphasis on texture, the “Rustic” grade is ideal.

Beech Wood: Key Characteristics

Beech (Fagus) is one of the most popular species used in the production of furniture and interior decor. Craftsmen choose solid beech wood for its high density, strength, and ease of processing.

Technical Parameters

  • The density of beech is 680 kg/m³, making it a heavy and hard wood.
  • On the Janka scale, its hardness is 1,450 lbf, and on the Brinell scale, it is 3.8.
  • Thanks to its dense structure, the species shows high performance in bending, compression, and tension strength.

Color and Texture

  • The color of beech varies from light pink to pale red or yellowish-brown. After steaming (heat treatment), the wood acquires a reddish-brown or rich pink hue.
  • The solid wood is characterized by a uniform structure without prominent annual rings.

Processing Features

  • Beech can be processed mechanically without issue. The wood is easily cut, routed, and sanded to a smooth surface.
  • One of the most valuable properties of beech is its ability to bend after steaming. The material is used to create curved parts.
  • This hard species accepts stains, lacquers, and oils, which allows for changes in the appearance of the products.

Uses of Beech Sawn Veneer

Sawn beech veneer is a versatile facing material that combines the aesthetics of wood with durability. Where is sawn beech veneer used?

  1. Flooring. Used in the production of engineered wood flooring as the top layer, giving the flooring a natural look. Beech engineered flooring is known for its durability and fits harmoniously into various interior styles.
  2. Countertops. Durable beech veneer is suitable for facing countertops for dining and writing desks, reception desks, retail counters, bar areas, and kitchen islands.
  3. Furniture fronts. The lumber is used for finishing cabinet doors, dressers, and chests. The surface is easily stained, painted, and lacquered, allowing the fronts to be adapted to a specific design.
  4. Stairs. Beech veneer is used to face the treads of interior stairs. An additional protective coating ensures a long service life.
  5. Doors and partitions. Used in the production of interior doors, mobile partitions, screens, and room dividers. Non-structural partitions are a popular solution for zoning offices, studio apartments, and commercial spaces.
  6. Wall panels. Light-colored wood with a uniform texture can be the basis for exclusive interior panels. The surface can be stained to fit a decorative panel into a design project.
  7. Decor and household items. Crafters create organizers, napkin holders, cases, picture frames, candle holders, lamps, figurines, clocks, and more from beech veneer.

High-quality lumber is suitable for use in both the craft sector and for mass production.
