Beech Wood: Key Characteristics

Beech (Fagus) is a hardwood species in high demand in the European and American furniture industries. Its dense structure, high strength, and exceptional bending capability make beech an indispensable material for creating both classic and modern furniture.

1 4

Physical and Mechanical Properties of Solid Beech

  • The average density of dry beech wood is approximately 680-720 kg/m³. On the Janka scale, its hardness is 1450 lbf, and on the Brinell scale, it is 3.7-3.9. These indicators demonstrate high resistance to impact and wear.
  • An important advantage of beech is its flexibility after steaming. The wood bends easily, allowing for the creation of elements with complex curved shapes. The solid wood has moderate viscosity, minimizing the risk of splitting when drilled.

Visual Characteristics of Beech

  • The sapwood and heartwood of beech are almost indistinguishable in color. Freshly sawn wood has a light cream or pale pink hue. After steaming (heat treatment), the solid wood acquires a reddish-brown color.
  • The texture of beech is fine and uniform, with a barely perceptible grain. The fibers are usually straight. Interlocked grain is not typical for beech. Small knots may be present on the surface.

Processing Features

  • This hardwood is easy to cut, mill, sand, and drill, and it holds fasteners well. Beech glues without any issues.
  • Light-colored solid beech accepts lacquers, oils, paints, and stains well.

Features of Grade 2 Edged Beech Lumber

Grade 2 edged lumber is a strong and stable wood product that has visual characteristics distinguishing it from higher grades.

Key characteristics of Grade 2 edged boards:

  • Dry, loose knots with a diameter of up to 5 mm are permissible. The number of knots per linear meter is not strictly regulated. However, they should not be located close to each other or to the edges of the board, so as not to reduce the strength of the lumber.
  • Surface cracks up to 100 mm (3.94″) in length that do not affect the structural integrity of the board may be present.
  • Noticeable color variations between different areas are allowed.

What is Edged Beech Lumber?

Edged lumber is a wood product from which the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. High-quality logs are selected to produce edged boards. The raw material is sawn into boards, taking into account the direction of the grain and the required thickness and length. Then, the blanks go through machines where residual bark is removed and straight edges are formed. The wood’s moisture content is brought to an optimal 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry joinery boards are then sorted by grade, assessing color, grain structure, and the number and type of knots.

How Does Kiln Drying of Boards Work?

Our in-stock program features kiln-dried edged boards. Kiln drying of wood is a high-tech and controlled process. Unlike air drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees a stable and uniformly dried material with an optimal joinery moisture content of 8-12%.

2 4

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns:

  1. Loading the Lumber. Boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly applied to hardwoods, such as oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and equalizes moisture, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity of the air inside the kiln are controlled by a computer and changed according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly track the wood’s condition. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, dry wood is treated with steam. Then the boards are gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient temperature (approximately 35–45 °C) to avoid condensation.

Kiln-dried edged boards are ideal for making furniture, doors and other interior elements. Wood at joinery moisture content is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.

Advantages of Edged Beech Lumber

  1. Versatility of Application. The material is suitable for both mass production of furniture and individual craft projects.
  2. Stability. Thanks to kiln drying, the result is uniformly dried and stable solid boards, ready for further mechanical processing.
  3. Waste Reduction and Cost-Effectiveness. High-quality primary processing of the lumber reduces the amount of waste and increases the raw material utilization rate. This means you pay only for the usable volume of material, which is especially important in mass production.
  4. Optimization of Production Processes. Lumber with pre-processed side edges reduces cutting time and optimizes production processes. Edged boards are easy to plane, mill, sand, stain, lacquer, and paint.
  5. Convenience in Logistics and Storage. Thanks to their regular shape, the boards are easy to stack, which saves warehouse space, simplifies transportation, and reduces logistics costs.

Applications of Edged Beech Boards

Edged lumber is one of the most popular wood products in the woodworking industry. Below are the areas where this natural material is actively used.

3 4

Furniture Manufacturing

Edged boards are used in the manufacturing of frames and fronts for cabinets, dressers, and nightstands, and tables, chairs, beds, ottomans, and benches. Wooden furniture can be stained to logically fit into various design project styles.

Construction and Finishing

This lumber product is used as a structural and finishing material. Boards are used to create subfloors, flooring (parquet, parquet boards, and tongue-and-groove boards), wall panels, non-load-bearing walls, and interior stairs.

Door and Window Manufacturing

Thanks to its stability and ease of processing, edged lumber is used in the manufacturing of interior doors, window frames, casings, and sills.

Craft and Designer Projects

For workshops that create unique products, edged boards open up wide possibilities. Joiners create custom-made exclusive furniture, interior panels, room dividers and screens, and a variety of interior decor.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

What species of edged boards are available for order?

We offer boards in over 10 species. Hardwoods: European Oak, Red Oak, Ash, Alder, European Walnut, Acacia, Beech, Hornbeam, Elm, Maple, Cherry. Softwoods: Pine, Spruce (Fir).

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order for boards is 1 container.

What are the delivery times?

Delivery times for wood products depend on supply and destination. Estimated times are 4-8 weeks.

How are the boards packaged for transportation?

Edged boards are hermetically sealed in film for safe sea transport.

What is edged lumber and how does it differ from unedged lumber?

On edged lumber, the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. Unedged lumber, in turn, retains its natural edge.

What is the optimal moisture content for joinery lumber?

For joinery work, including furniture manufacturing, the moisture content of the boards should be between 8–12%.

What sizes of edged boards are available in stock?

We have lumber with the following parameters in stock:

  • thickness: 30 mm, 50 mm / 1.18″, 1.97″;
  • width: from 20 cm / from 7.87″;
  • length: 2.2-4.5 m / 86.61″-177.2″.

How should edged lumber be stored properly?

Lumber should be stored in a dry, ventilated room with a stable temperature and humidity level.

Can edged lumber be used for exterior work?

Yes, hardwoods are used for exterior work. The wood must be treated with antiseptics and special protective coatings.

What are the grades of edged lumber?

Edged lumber is classified into three main grades:

  • Grade 1. Practically free of knots, with a uniform texture and color.
  • Grade 2. Allows knots up to 5 mm in diameter, minor surface cracks, and color variations.
  • Grade 3. A large number of knots, surface and through cracks, and uneven coloring.

What is kiln drying of wood and why is it important?

Kiln drying of wood is a controlled process during which the material is dried to an optimal moisture content (8-12%) in special chambers. This drying method ensures board stability and durability.
