European Walnut Wood: Characteristics

European walnut (Juglans regia), also known as English walnut, is a premium hardwood highly valued in the U.S. woodworking market. Thanks to its combination of decorative qualities and physical-mechanical properties, this solid wood is considered an optimal material for furniture production and interior finishing.

1 98

Technical Properties of Solid Walnut

  • The density of the dry wood is approximately 650–680 kg/m³. On the Janka hardness scale, European walnut scores around 1220 lbf. According to the Brinell classification, its hardness is 3.4. These parameters indicate its resistance to damage and wear.
  • Walnut wood is tough, which makes it resistant to splitting. After steam treatment, the solid wood can be bent.

Aesthetic Qualities of European Walnut

  • The sapwood has a grayish-white hue. The heartwood’s color ranges from light brown to rich chocolate tones, often with grayish or reddish streaks.
  • Walnut has a uniform grain and a natural, silky luster. The fibers are usually straight, though wavy sections and small knots are sometimes present.

Workability

  • Walnut wood is easy to cut, glue, plane, sand, polish, and mill. The surface does not splinter, which is an advantage for manual work.
  • This valuable solid wood accepts stains, varnishes, and oils. Finishes can enhance its natural color and unique texture, which is especially prized in the production of premium interior items.

Features of Grade 1 European Walnut Edged Lumber

Grade 1 edged lumber is used in furniture manufacturing, joinery, interior finishing, and other products where performance and aesthetic qualities are important.

Key characteristics of Grade 1 edged lumber:

  • Sound knots up to 1 cm (0.39″) in diameter are permitted, with 2-3 knots per linear meter (39.37″).
  • The wood texture is uniform, and the fibers are straight.
  • Minor natural variations in shade are possible.

What is European Walnut Edged Lumber?

Edged lumber is a wood product from which the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. High-quality logs are selected for producing edged lumber. The raw material is sawn into boards, taking into account the direction of the grain and the required thickness and length. The blanks then pass through machines where the remaining bark is removed and straight edges are formed. The wood’s moisture content is brought to an optimal 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry boards are then sorted by grade, assessing color, grain structure, and the quantity and type of knots.

How Does Kiln-Drying Work?

Our warehouse stock features kiln-dried edged lumber. Kiln-drying wood is a high-tech, controlled process. Unlike air-drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees a stable, uniformly dried material with an optimal woodworking moisture content of 8-12%.

2 98

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns are:

  1. Loading the Lumber. Boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows to allow for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly applied to hardwoods like oak or beech. Steaming opens the pores and equalizes moisture, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity inside the kiln are computer-controlled and changed according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly monitor the condition of the wood. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, the dried lumber is treated with steam. The boards are then gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient environment (approximately 35–45 °C) to prevent condensation.

Kiln-dried edged lumber is ideally suited for producing furniture, doors, and other interior elements. Wood at this moisture level is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.

Advantages of European Walnut Edged Lumber

  1. Versatility. The material is suitable for both mass-produced furniture and custom craft projects.
  2. Stability. Kiln-drying results in uniformly dried and stable solid boards that are ready for further machining.
  3. Reduced Waste and Cost-Effectiveness. High-quality primary processing of the lumber reduces waste and increases the raw material utilization rate. This means you only pay for the usable volume of material, which is especially important in mass production.
  4. Optimized Production Processes. Lumber with pre-processed side edges reduces cutting time and optimizes production workflows. Edged lumber is easy to plane, mill, sand, stain, varnish, and paint.
  5. Convenient Logistics and Storage. Thanks to their regular shape, the boards are easy to stack, which saves warehouse space, simplifies transportation, and reduces logistics costs.

Uses of European Walnut Edged Lumber

Edged lumber is one of the most popular materials in the woodworking industry. Below are the areas where this natural material is actively used.

3 90

Furniture Manufacturing

Edged lumber is used to make carcasses and fronts for cabinets, dressers, and nightstands, as well as tables, chairs, beds, ottomans, and benches. Wooden furniture can be stained to logically fit into various design styles.

Construction and Finishing

This lumber product is used as both a structural and finishing material. Boards are used to create decking, flooring (parquet, solid, and tongue-and-groove boards), wall panels, non-load-bearing walls, and interior stairs.

Door and Window Production

Thanks to its stability and ease of processing, edged lumber is used in the manufacture of interior doors, window frames, casings, and sills.

Craft and Designer Projects

For workshops that create unique products, edged lumber offers wide possibilities. Woodworkers produce custom-made exclusive furniture, interior panels, room dividers and screens, and various interior decor.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

What wood species are available for order as edged lumber?

We offer boards from over 10 species. Hardwoods: European Oak, Red Oak, Ash, Alder, European Walnut, Acacia, Beech, Hornbeam, Elm, Maple, Cherry. Softwoods: Pine, Spruce.

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order for lumber is 1 container.

What are the delivery times?

Lumber delivery times depend on the supply volume and destination. Estimated timelines are 4-8 weeks.

How is the lumber packaged for transportation?

The edged boards are hermetically sealed in film for safe sea transport.

What is edged lumber and how does it differ from unedged?

The bark and wane have been removed from the side edges of edged lumber. Unedged lumber, on the other hand, retains its natural edge.

What is considered the optimal moisture content for a woodworking board?

For woodworking, particularly furniture production, the moisture content of the boards should be between 8–12%.

What sizes of edged lumber are available in stock?

We have lumber with the following parameters in stock:

  • thickness: 30 mm, 50 mm / 1.18″, 1.97″;
  • width: from 20 cm / from 7.87″;
  • length: 2.2-4.5 m / 86.61″-177.2″.

How should edged lumber be stored properly?

Lumber should be stored in a dry, ventilated room with a stable temperature and humidity level.

Can edged lumber be used for exterior work?

Yes, hardwoods can be used for exterior projects. The wood must be treated with antiseptics and special protective coatings.

What are the grades of edged lumber?

Edged lumber is classified into three main grades:

  • Grade 1. Practically free of knots, with a uniform texture and color.
  • Grade 2. Allows for knots up to 5 mm in diameter, minor surface cracks, and color variations.
  • Grade 3. A large number of knots, surface and through-cracks, and uneven coloring.

What is kiln-drying of wood and why is it important?

Kiln-drying is a controlled process in which wood is dried to an optimal moisture content (8-12%) in special chambers. This drying method ensures the stability and durability of the board.
