Hornbeam Wood: Characteristics

Hornbeam (Carpinus) is a hardwood species distinguished by its hardness and wear resistance. Hornbeam is an indispensable material for producing specialized, durable products.

1 28

Performance Parameters of Hornbeam Wood

  • The density of the dry wood is approximately 750-800 kg/m³. On the Janka scale, its hardness ranges from 1630-1700 lbf. On the Brinell scale, it is 3.5.
  • Hornbeam wood is tough and moderately flexible. Its dense structure minimizes the risk of splitting during machining. Hornbeam is difficult to bend.

Aesthetic Properties of Hornbeam

  • The sapwood and heartwood of hornbeam are nearly indistinguishable in color. Freshly sawn wood has a pale cream or grayish-white hue. Over time, hornbeam may yellow slightly.
  • Hornbeam’s texture is fine, uniform, and even, with a barely perceptible grain. The fibers are usually straight, without significant interlocking. Small knots may occasionally be present.

Machining Details

  • Due to its high hardness, hornbeam wood is harder to saw and mill. Using high-quality, sharp tools is recommended. The wood glues, sands, and polishes well, and holds fasteners securely.
  • After sanding, the surface becomes smooth and even, simplifying the application of finishes. Hornbeam wood accepts varnishes, oils, stains, and paints.

Features of Grade 2 Edged Hornbeam Lumber

Grade 2 edged lumber is a strong and stable wood product that has visual characteristics distinguishing it from higher grades.

Key characteristics of Grade 2 edged boards:

  • Dry, loose knots up to 5 mm in diameter are permissible. The number of knots per linear meter is not strictly regulated. However, they should not be located close to each other or to the edges of the board, so as not to reduce the lumber’s strength.
  • Surface checks up to 100 mm (3.94″) in length that do not affect the board’s structural integrity may be present.
  • Noticeable color variations between different areas are allowed.

What is Edged Hornbeam Lumber?

Edged lumber is a wood product from which the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. High-quality logs are selected to produce edged lumber. The raw material is sawn into boards, considering the grain direction and required thickness and length. The rough-sawn boards then pass through machinery where the remaining bark is removed and straight edges are formed. The wood’s moisture content is brought to an optimal level of 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry joinery-grade lumber is then sorted by grade, evaluating color, grain structure, and the quantity and type of knots, among other factors.

How Does Kiln Drying Work?

Our in-stock inventory features kiln-dried edged lumber. Kiln drying wood is a high-tech, controlled process. Unlike air drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees a stable, uniformly dried material with an optimal moisture content of 8-12% for joinery.

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns:

  1. Loading the Lumber. Boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Spacers are left between the rows to allow free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly used for hardwoods, like oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and equalizes moisture, reducing the risk of checks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying Phase. The kilns are equipped with heating and ventilation systems. The temperature and humidity inside the kiln are computer-controlled and adjusted according to a set schedule based on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly track the wood’s condition. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, dry wood is treated with steam. The boards are then gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient environment (approximately 35–45 °C / 95–113 °F) to prevent condensation.

Kiln-dried edged lumber is ideally suited for manufacturing furniture, doors, and other interior elements. Wood at this moisture level is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.

Advantages of Edged Hornbeam Lumber

  1. Versatility. The material is suitable for both mass production of furniture and individual craft projects.
  2. Stability. Thanks to kiln drying, the result is uniformly dried and stable solid wood boards, ready for further machining.
  3. Waste Reduction and Cost-Effectiveness. High-quality primary processing of the lumber reduces waste and increases the raw material yield. This means you only pay for the usable volume of material, which is especially important in mass production.
  4. Streamlined Production Processes. Lumber with pre-processed side edges reduces cutting time and optimizes production workflows. Edged boards are easy to plane, mill, sand, stain, varnish, and paint.
  5. Convenient Logistics and Storage. The uniform shape of the boards makes them easy to stack, which saves warehouse space, simplifies transportation, and reduces logistics costs.

Uses of Edged Hornbeam Lumber

Edged lumber is one of the most popular materials in the woodworking industry. Below are the areas where this natural material is actively used.

3 25

Furniture Manufacturing

Edged lumber is used in the production of cabinet bodies and fronts for wardrobes, dressers, and nightstands, and for tables, chairs, beds, ottomans, and benches. Wooden furniture can be stained to fit logically into various design styles.

Construction and Finishing

This lumber is used as both a structural and finishing material. It is used to create subfloors, flooring (parquet, floorboards, and tongue-and-groove planks), wall panels, non-load-bearing walls, and interior stairs.

Door and Window Production

Thanks to its stability and ease of processing, edged lumber is used in the manufacturing of interior doors, window frames, casings, and sills.

Craft and Design Projects

For workshops that create unique products, edged lumber opens up wide possibilities. Woodworkers produce custom-made exclusive furniture, interior panels, room dividers and screens, and various types of interior decor.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

What species of edged lumber are available to order?

You can order lumber from over 10 species. Hardwoods: European Oak, Red Oak, Ash, Alder, European Walnut, Black Locust, Beech, Hornbeam, Elm, Maple, Cherry. Softwoods: Pine, Spruce.

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order volume for lumber is 1 container.

What are the lead times for an order?

Lumber delivery times depend on the order volume and destination. Estimated lead time is 4-8 weeks.

How is the lumber packaged for transport?

The edged lumber is hermetically sealed in plastic wrap for safe sea transport.

What is edged lumber and how does it differ from unedged?

On edged lumber, the bark and wane have been removed from the sides. Unedged lumber, in contrast, retains its natural edge.

What moisture content is considered optimal for joinery lumber?

For joinery work, particularly furniture manufacturing, the moisture content of the boards should be between 8–12%.

What sizes of edged lumber are available in stock?

We have lumber available with the following parameters:

  • Thickness: 30 mm, 50 mm / 1.18″, 1.97″;
  • Width: from 20 cm / from 7.87″;
  • Length: 2.2-4.5 m / 86.61″-177.2″.

How should edged lumber be stored correctly?

The lumber should be stored in a dry, ventilated area with a stable temperature and humidity level.

Can edged lumber be used for exterior projects?

Yes, hardwoods are used for exterior work. The wood must be treated with preservatives and special protective coatings.

What are the grades of edged lumber?

Edged lumber is classified into three main grades:

  • Grade 1. Virtually knot-free, with a uniform texture and color.
  • Grade 2. Allows knots up to 5 mm in diameter, minor surface checks, and color variations.
  • Grade 3. A large number of knots, surface and through checks, and uneven coloring.

What is kiln drying and why is it important?

Kiln drying is a controlled process where wood is dried to an optimal moisture content (8-12%) in special chambers. This drying method ensures board stability and durability.
