Maple Wood: Characteristics

Maple (Acer) is a classic choice for furniture and finishing material manufacturers in the U.S. market. Thanks to its strength and durability, this light-colored wood is an optimal material for creating both functional and decorative items.

1 60

Technical Properties of Maple

  • The density of the dry solid wood is 650-710 kg/m³, meaning the material is quite heavy and resistant to mechanical damage. On the Janka hardness scale, maple’s rating is 1450 lbf. According to the Brinell classification, its hardness is 4.1–4.7. These parameters indicate its resistance to dents. Solid maple is suitable for flooring and other products subject to intensive use.
  • Maple has moderate toughness and resists splitting well. It can be bent after steam treatment.

Aesthetic Properties of Maple Wood

  • The sapwood and heartwood have similar shades: from creamy white to light yellow. Over time, the wood may develop a golden hue when exposed to light.
  • Maple has a uniform and fine grain. The fibers are straight, but unique patterns such as “bird’s eye,” “curly/wavy,” or “tiger maple” are sometimes found. This figured structure adds special aesthetic value to the material. Typically, the wood has a minimal number of knots. The surface of the solid wood has a delicate natural luster.

Workability

  • The wood is easy to cut, plane, sand, and rout. The material glues excellently, ensuring strong and reliable joints.
  • Maple readily absorbs varnishes and clear oils. This allows for preserving the light shade of the solid wood and highlighting its unique texture.

Features of Grade 1 Edged Maple Lumber

Grade 1 edged boards are used in furniture production, carpentry, for manufacturing interior finishes, and other products where performance and aesthetic qualities are important.

The main characteristics of Grade 1 edged boards are:

  • Sound knots up to 1 cm (0.39″) in diameter are permitted, with 2-3 knots per linear meter (39.37″).
  • The wood texture is uniform, and the fibers are straight.
  • Minor natural variations in shade are possible.

What is Edged Maple Lumber?

Edged lumber is a sawn timber product from which the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. High-quality logs are selected for producing edged lumber. The raw material is sawn into boards, taking into account the grain direction and the required thickness and length. The blanks then pass through machines where the remaining bark is removed and straight edges are formed. The moisture content of the wood is brought to an optimal level of 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry joinery boards are sorted by grade, evaluating color, fiber structure, the number and type of knots, etc.

How Does Kiln Drying of Boards Work?

Our stock program features kiln-dried edged lumber. Kiln drying of wood is a high-tech, controlled process. Unlike air drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees a stable, uniformly dried material with an optimal joinery moisture content of 8-12%.

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns are:

  1. Loading the Lumber. The boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows to allow for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly applied to hardwoods, such as oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and equalizes moisture content, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with heating and ventilation systems. The temperature and humidity inside the kiln are computer-controlled and adjusted according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly monitor the condition of the wood. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, the dried lumber is treated with steam. The boards are then gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient temperature (approximately 35–45 °C / 95–113 °F) to avoid condensation.

Kiln-dried edged lumber is ideally suited for the production of furniture, doors, and other interior elements. Wood at joinery moisture content is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.

Advantages of Edged Maple Lumber

  1. Versatile Applications. The material is suitable for both mass-produced furniture and individual craft projects.
  2. Stability. Thanks to kiln drying, the result is uniformly dried and stable solid boards, ready for further machining.
  3. Reduced Waste and Cost-Effectiveness. High-quality primary processing of the lumber reduces waste and increases the raw material yield. This means you pay only for the usable volume of material, which is especially important in mass production.
  4. Streamlined Production Processes. Lumber products with pre-processed side edges reduce cutting time and streamline production processes. Edged boards are easy to plane, rout, sand, stain, varnish, and paint.
  5. Convenient Logistics and Storage. Thanks to their uniform shape, the boards are easy to stack, which saves warehouse space, simplifies transportation, and reduces logistics costs.

Applications for Edged Maple Lumber

Edged lumber is one of the most popular timber products in the woodworking industry. Below are the areas where this natural material is actively used.

3 53

Furniture Manufacturing

Edged lumber is used in the construction of carcasses and fronts for cabinets, dressers, and nightstands, as well as for tables, chairs, beds, ottomans, and benches. Wooden furniture can be stained to fit seamlessly into various design styles.

Construction and Finishing

The lumber is used as both a structural and a finishing material. The boards are used to create subflooring, floor coverings (parquet, flooring planks, and tongue-and-groove boards), wall panels, non-load-bearing walls, and interior stairs.

Door and Window Manufacturing

Thanks to its stability and ease of processing, edged lumber is used in the manufacturing of interior doors, window frames, casings, and sills.

Craft and Designer Projects

For workshops that create unique items, edged lumber opens up wide possibilities. Carpenters create custom-made exclusive furniture, interior panels, room dividers and screens, and a variety of interior decor.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

What species of edged lumber are available for order?

We offer lumber from over 10 species. Hardwoods: European Oak, Red Oak, Ash, Alder, European Walnut, Black Locust, Beech, Hornbeam, Elm (Wych Elm), Maple, Cherry. Softwoods: Pine, Spruce (Fir).

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order volume for lumber is 1 container.

What are the delivery times?

Lumber delivery times depend on the supply volume and destination. Estimated delivery is 4-8 weeks.

How is the lumber packaged for transportation?

The edged lumber is hermetically sealed in film for safe sea transport.

What is edged lumber and how does it differ from unedged lumber?

The bark and wane have been removed from the side edges of edged lumber. Unedged lumber, on the other hand, retains its natural edge.

What is the optimal moisture content for joinery lumber?

For woodworking, particularly furniture manufacturing, the moisture content of the boards should be within the 8–12% range.

What sizes of edged lumber are available in stock?

We have lumber in stock with the following parameters:

  • thickness: 30 mm, 50 mm / 1.18″, 1.97″;
  • width: from 20 cm / from 7.87″;
  • length: 2.2-4.5 m / 86.61″-177.2″.

How should edged lumber be stored properly?

The lumber should be stored in a dry, ventilated room with stable temperature and humidity levels.

Can edged lumber be used for exterior projects?

Yes, hardwoods can be used for exterior projects. The wood must be treated with preservatives and special protective coatings.

What are the grades of edged lumber?

Edged lumber is classified into three main grades:

  • Grade 1. Practically free of knots, with a uniform texture and color.
  • Grade 2. Allows for knots up to 5 mm in diameter, minor surface cracks, and color variations.
  • Grade 3. A large number of knots, surface and through-cracks, and uneven coloring.

What is kiln drying and why is it important?

Kiln drying is a controlled process in which wood is dried to an optimal moisture content (8-12%) in special chambers. This drying method ensures the stability and durability of the board.
