The Advantages of Sawn Ash Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber obtained by sawing a solid piece of wood on special equipment. Lamellas typically have a thickness of 2 to 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the pattern, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Due to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer preserves the natural beauty of the solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendliness. These thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to use commercial wood.
  4. Wide Application. Sawn veneer is used to create various carpentry products, from furniture fronts and engineered wood flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape, making them suitable for use in residential and public spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Rustic Grade Sawn Ash Veneer

“Rustic” grade sawn veneer has the most natural features. The cost of this material is significantly lower than grades A and B.

Characteristics of “Rustic” grade sawn veneer:

  • Knots of various types are permitted: sound, loose, black, with cracks.
  • The surface may have minor cracks and resin pockets.
  • There may be noticeable color variations.
  • Despite visual imperfections, the material remains strong.

This facing material, with its pronounced wood characteristics, is chosen for projects in rustic, loft, chalet, eco, Scandi, and country styles.

Sawn Ash Lamella Production Technology

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of the lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Only top-grade or first-grade boards are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying allows for the creation of solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8–10%. Drying with adherence to technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next stage is calibrating the boards. The material is adjusted to fit the dimensions of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for size and quality. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked in bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium facing material whose production is focused on quality and preserving the wood’s properties.

Uses of Sawn Ash Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with type of lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Engineered Wood Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered wood flooring. The wood sheets give the multi-layered floor covering an aesthetic appeal.
  • Countertops. Lamellas are used for finishing the surfaces of writing and dining tables, bar counters, kitchen worktops, and retail counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. A lamella finish gives furniture a solid appearance. It’s an ideal choice for cabinets, chests of drawers, display cases, and dressers. The material is resistant to temperature changes and moisture and is easy to stain and varnish.
  • Stair Treads for Indoor Stairs. Due to its high strength and durability, sawn veneer is a popular material for finishing stairs. The 2–10 mm thickness is sufficient to withstand the operational load in townhomes, country houses, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. These non-load-bearing structures help zone a space and often play a vital role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wooden lamellas are used to create unique wall panels. The veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to create a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to make a variety of small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, eyeglass stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the foundation for various carpentry products. This high-quality facing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress are required.

Ash Wood: Characteristics

Ash (Fraxinus) is one of the most valuable deciduous tree species in Europe. The wood is known for its strength, flexibility, and aesthetics. Ash is a popular material for manufacturing sports equipment, tools, furniture, and flooring. The tree is found throughout Europe, from Great Britain and Southern Scandinavia to the western regions of Ukraine. It is common in mixed and deciduous forests.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry ash wood is 660–700 kg/m³.
  • Janka hardness: 1480 lbf; Brinell hardness: 4.
  • Ash has high impact strength and elasticity. The material is used to make tool handles, baseball bats, bows, and guitars.

Texture, Pattern, and Color

  • Ash wood has straight, even grain, and the cut surface has a pronounced texture. The growth rings are clearly visible.
  • The sapwood’s color palette consists of light shades: cream, pale yellow, and light beige. The heartwood’s color ranges from light brown to grayish-brown, sometimes with olive or black streaks.
  • Ash has large open pores that are clearly visible on the cuts.

Processing Characteristics

  • When dried in a kiln, the wood dries relatively quickly and becomes stable.
  • Ash is easy to process with hand and power tools. High viscosity minimizes the risk of splitting. The solid wood can be sanded, routed, glued, and polished to a smooth surface.
  • Ash, like beech, bends well under steam. This property is actively used in the production of furniture with curved elements.
  • When the application technology is followed, the species takes well to various coatings, from varnishes and oils to stains.
