Benefits of Sawn Beech Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber obtained by sawing solid wood on specialized equipment. Lamella thickness is typically 2 to 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the pattern, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Thanks to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical loads and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer retains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendly. Thin wood sheets are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to use industrial wood.
  4. Wide Application. Sawn veneer is used to create various millwork products, from furniture fronts and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape, making them suitable for use in residential and public spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Grade A Sawn Beech Veneer

Classification by grade allows for an assessment of the lumber’s quality and appearance. Grade A is the highest quality category.

Features of Grade A sawn veneer:

  • Healthy white knots with a diameter of up to 1 cm / 0.39″ are permitted, with 2-3 knots per linear meter / 39.37″.
  • The texture is uniform, with straight grains.
  • Minor natural variations in shade are possible.

This veneer is ideal for creating premium products where a flawless appearance is essential.

Sawn Beech Lamella Manufacturing Technology

Sawn veneer production is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of this lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Boards of the highest or first grade are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying allows for solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10% to be obtained. Drying in compliance with technology releases internal wood stress and prevents material deformation.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next stage is board calibration. The material is adjusted to fit the dimensions of the saw blade cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the desired thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with size and quality standards. After being sorted by grade, the lamellas are stacked into bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium facing material, the production of which is focused on quality and preserving the properties of the wood.

Uses for Sawn Beech Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Parquet Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of parquet flooring. The wood sheets make the multilayer flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used for finishing countertops for desks and dining tables, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and retail displays.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella facing gives furniture a solid appearance. This is the optimal choice for cabinets, dressers, tallboys, and chests of drawers. The material is resistant to temperature and moisture changes and is easily stained and varnished.
  • Indoor Stair Treads. Thanks to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for stair cladding. A thickness of 2–10 mm is sufficient to withstand the operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial premises. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-load-bearing structures help to zone the space and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wood lamellas are used to create wall panels with a unique pattern. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to obtain a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different types of textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Artisans use sawn veneer to make a variety of small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the basis for a variety of millwork products. High-quality facing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed but also durability and resistance to mechanical loads.

Beech Wood: Key Characteristics

Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is one of the most common deciduous species in Europe, used in furniture manufacturing, flooring, etc. The wood’s value lies in its density, uniform structure, and light color. Beech is common in most countries of Central and Western Europe, from France to Ukraine and Northern Italy. The tree is also found in Southern Scandinavia.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry beech wood is approximately 680 kg/m³.
  • Its hardness ratings are 1450 lbf on the Janka scale and 3.8 on the Brinell scale, which indicates resistance to wear and impact.
  • Beech has high toughness and flexibility, meaning the wood is resistant to splitting. The wood is used for bent furniture elements, such as chair backs.

Texture, Pattern, and Color

  • Beech grains are usually straight, and the texture is uniform and fine. This allows for products with a smooth surface.
  • The color of the sapwood and heartwood is practically identical. The palette consists of light shades: creamy, creamy-pink, and light brown. Over time, beech may become more saturated due to sunlight exposure.
  • Knots are usually small and not very noticeable.

Processing Features

  • After kiln drying, the wood becomes stable.
  • Due to its hardness and density, beech requires the use of sharp and durable tools. The species can be sanded, routed, glued, and polished.
  • Beech is one of the best species for bending. After steam treatment, the wood becomes flexible, and after drying, it holds its shape well.
  • Thanks to its light color and uniform texture, beech easily accepts stains. The species also responds well to painting and varnishing.
