Advantages of Elm Sawn Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber obtained by sawing a solid piece of wood using specialized equipment. The thickness of lamella typically ranges from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078-0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the grain, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Durability and Longevity. Thanks to its sufficient thickness, the lamella withstands mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer retains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Sustainability. These thin sheets of wood are environmentally friendly. Lumber is an efficient way to utilize industrial wood.
  4. Broad Applications. Sawn veneer is used to create various woodworking products, from furniture fronts and engineered wood flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape, making them suitable for use in residential and public spaces.
  6. Ease of Processing. Sawn veneer is easy to process. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Grade B Elm Sawn Veneer

Grade B sawn veneer is priced lower than Grade A but retains all the main advantages of sawn veneer.

Characteristics of Grade B lamella:

  • The surface may have black knots up to 5 mm / 0.2″ in diameter. The number of knots is not strictly regulated, but there are requirements for their placement. Knots should not be close to each other or the edges to avoid reducing the strength of the lamella.
  • Color changes and noticeable tonal variations are possible.
  • The texture may be naturally uneven.

This material is used for projects where aesthetic requirements are not strict, or for products where natural features are part of the design.

The Technology of Manufacturing Elm Sawn Veneer (Lamella)

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Only the highest or first-grade boards are chosen for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in specialized kilns. Kiln drying allows for a stable moisture content of 8-10%. Drying with adherence to technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next stage is calibrating the boards. The material is adjusted to the size of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for size and quality. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked into packs.

Sawn veneer is a premium facing material whose production is focused on quality and the preservation of wood properties.

Uses of Elm Sawn Veneer (Lamella)

Sawn veneer is a durable, long-lasting, and easy-to-work-with lumber product. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Engineered Wood Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered wood flooring. The wood sheets make the multilayer flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used to finish countertops for writing and dining tables, bar tops, kitchen work surfaces, and retail counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella veneer gives furniture a solid look. It’s an ideal choice for cabinets, dressers, tallboys, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and moisture fluctuations and is easily stained and varnished.
  • Interior Stair Treads. Due to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for cladding stairs. The 2-10 mm thickness is sufficient to withstand the operational load in townhomes, country houses, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Sawn veneer-faced interior doors are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. These non-load-bearing structures help zone spaces and often play an important role in the interior design of studios, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wooden lamellas are used to create wall panels with unique grain patterns. Veneer sheets can be combined in different ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with various textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Artisans craft various small household items from sawn veneer: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, eyeglass stands, key holders, clocks, etc.

Wood lamella is the foundation for various woodworking products. High-quality veneer makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Elm Wood: Key Parameters

Elm (Ulmus minor) is a deciduous species valued for its strength, elasticity, and expressive texture. Elm is a widespread species in Europe, North Africa, and western Asia. The tree is often found in river floodplains and fertile soils.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry elm wood is approximately 650-690 kg/m³.
  • Janka hardness is 810 lbf, and Brinell hardness is 3.4-3.7.
  • Elm is characterized by high toughness and elasticity, making it resistant to splitting.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • Elm fibers are often wavy and interlocked, creating a complex pattern. Due to this feature, the wood is less prone to splitting.
  • The color of the sapwood is pale white or yellowish-white. The heartwood color ranges from light brown to dark brown, sometimes with reddish or greenish streaks.
  • Elm has an expressive texture due to its large pores.

Processing Characteristics

  • Because of its interlocked grain, the wood can be difficult to work with. To make working with elm easier and avoid chipping, use sharp tools. The solid wood is well-suited for turning and bending. The wood can be sanded and polished.
  • The species readily accepts a variety of finishes, from oils and waxes to lacquers, which help highlight its unique grain pattern.
