Advantages of Sawn Hornbeam Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber produced by sawing a solid wood block with specialized equipment. Lamellas typically range in thickness from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″. Sawn veneer preserves the pattern, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Due to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various finishing treatments.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer retains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-friendliness. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an effective way to use industrial wood.
  4. Wide Range of Applications. Sawn veneer is used to create various woodworking products, from furniture fronts and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape and are suitable for use in residential and public spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Rustic Grade Sawn Hornbeam Veneer

Rustic grade sawn veneer has the most natural features. The material’s cost is significantly lower than grades A and B.

Characteristics of “rustic” grade sawn veneer:

  • Accepts various types of knots: live, loose, black, with cracks.
  • Minor cracks and resin pockets may be present on the surface.
  • There are noticeable color variations.
  • Despite visual imperfections, the material remains strong.

Decorative material with pronounced wood features is chosen for projects in the rustic, loft, chalet, eco, Scandi, and country styles.

Sawn Hornbeam Lamella Production Technology

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. Lumber manufacturing consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Grade A or B boards are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8–10%. Drying in compliance with the technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Stock Sizing. The next stage is sizing the boards. The material is adjusted to the dimensions of the saw head.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the desired thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for size and quality. After grading, the lamellas are stacked in bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium finishing material whose production is focused on quality and preserving the wood’s properties.

Uses for Sawn Hornbeam Lamella

Sawn veneer is strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. The veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Parquet Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered hardwood flooring. The wood sheets make the multi-layer floor covering aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used for finishing countertops on desks and dining tables, bar tops, kitchen work surfaces, and trade counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella facing gives furniture a solid look. It’s an optimal choice for cabinets, dressers, tall storage units, and chests of drawers. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and is easily stained and varnished.
  • Stair Treads. Due to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for stair cladding. The 2–10 mm thickness is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial premises. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-structural constructions help to zone the space and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wood lamellas create wall panels with a unique pattern. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different types of texture.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Artisans craft various small household items from sawn veneer: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the base for a wide range of woodworking products. Quality finishing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of wood is required, but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Hornbeam Wood: Key Parameters

European hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is a deciduous species that grows in the temperate climate of Europe and Asia. The wood is distinguished by its strength, density, and hardness. The material is used for projects that require maximum wear resistance.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry hornbeam wood is approximately 750 kg/m³. It is one of the densest deciduous species growing in Europe.
  • Janka hardness is 1,630 lbf, and Brinell hardness is 3.7.
  • Hornbeam has exceptional toughness and elasticity. The material is suitable for making products that withstand high impact loads. For example, hornbeam is used to create parts for machine tools, tool handles, and mallets.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • Hornbeam grain is often wavy or twisted, which requires specific processing techniques.
  • The sapwood and heartwood do not differ in color. Hornbeam has a uniform white or grayish-white hue. After drying, the solid wood may take on a creamy color.
  • Hornbeam has small but noticeable pores. On a cross-section, the wood appears very dense and uniform, with almost imperceptible growth rings.

Processing Features

  • Controlled kiln drying produces stable hornbeam solid wood.
  • Due to its extreme density and hardness, hornbeam can be difficult to process. The material requires the use of sharp and durable tools. The solid wood is well-suited for turning, sanding, and polishing.
  • The wood accepts paints and varnishes. Due to its light color and lack of a distinct pattern, it is often used as a base for imitating more expensive species.
