Advantages of Sawn Maple Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is a type of lumber obtained by sawing solid wood on specialized equipment. The thickness of a lamella is usually between 2 and 10 mm / 0.078-0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the wood’s grain, color, and texture.

The advantages of this material include:

  1. Strength and durability. Thanks to its sufficient thickness, the lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishes.
  2. Natural aesthetics. Sawn veneer preserves the natural beauty of the solid wood.
  3. Eco-friendliness. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to utilize industrial timber.
  4. Wide application. Sawn veneer is used to create various millwork products, from furniture fronts and engineered flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape, making them suitable for use in residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Ease of processing. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Sawn Maple Veneer, Grade B

Grade B sawn veneer has a lower price compared to Grade A but retains all the main advantages of sawn veneer.

Characteristics of Grade B lamella:

  • Black knots with a diameter of up to 5 mm / 0.2″ are allowed on the surface. The number of knots is not strictly regulated, but there is a requirement for their placement. Knots should not be located close to each other or to the edges to avoid reducing the lamella’s strength.
  • Possible color variations and noticeable tone differences;
  • Naturally heterogeneous texture.

This material is used for projects where aesthetic requirements are not strict, or for products where natural characteristics are part of the design.

Technology for Manufacturing Sawn Maple Lamella

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that allows the preservation of the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of the lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board selection. For lamella production, boards of the highest or first grade are selected.
  2. Wood drying. The selected boards are dried in special chambers. Kiln drying allows for solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10%. Drying that follows the proper technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Stock calibration. The next stage is calibrating the boards. The material is adjusted to fit the dimensions of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with size and quality standards. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked into packs.

Sawn veneer is a premium facing material, the production of which is focused on quality and the preservation of wood properties.

Uses for Sawn Maple Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with type of lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Engineered flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered flooring. The wood sheets make the multilayer flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used for finishing writing and dining table tops, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and retail counters.
  • Furniture fronts. A lamella finish gives furniture a substantial look. It’s an optimal choice for cabinets, dressers, tall units, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and is easily stained and varnished.
  • Interior stair treads. Due to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for cladding stairs. A thickness of 2-10 mm is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and interior partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial premises. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-structural constructions help zone a space and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and showrooms.
  • Wall panels. Wooden lamellas are used to create unique wall panels. The veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative canvas with different textures.
  • Household and decorative items. Artisans use sawn veneer to make a variety of small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, eyeglass stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wooden lamella is the basis for a variety of millwork products. High-quality facing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed, but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Maple Wood: Characteristics

Maple (Acer) is a deciduous species prized for its hardness, strength, and light color. The wood is a versatile material used in the production of furniture, musical instruments, flooring, and sports equipment. Maple is widespread in North America, Europe, and Asia. In Europe, the most common species are sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides), while in North America, it is sugar maple (Acer saccharum).

Technical Specifications

  • The average density of dry wood is approximately 650-700 kg/m³.
  • Janka hardness is 1450 lbf, and Brinell hardness is 3.8-4.1.
  • Maple has high viscosity and elasticity, allowing it to withstand significant mechanical loads.

Texture, Grain, Color

  • The grain is usually straight, and the texture is fine and uniform. Occasionally, logs with curly grain are found. Wavy and interlocked grains form unique patterns such as “bird’s-eye,” “wavy/quilted” maple, etc.
  • The sapwood is wide and light, with prevailing creamy, white shades. The heartwood’s color often doesn’t differ from the sapwood, but there are instances of wood with a light brown to reddish-brown hue.
  • Maple has small pores, which allows for a smooth surface after sanding.

Processing Features

  • For working with this hard species, it is recommended to use sharp tools. Maple can be turned, milled, cut, and sanded.
  • The wood readily accepts various finishes: lacquers, oils, waxes, and stains.
