What is Cherry Sawn Veneer?

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is a lumber product obtained by sawing a board. The resulting sheets are relatively strong, as they retain the structure of the solid wood, and are visually indistinguishable from it. Understanding the differences in veneer production technologies allows for an informed choice that favors the quality and durability of the facing material. Let’s look at the main features of different types of veneer.

  • Sawn Veneer. This material is produced by longitudinally sawing pre-dried boards. This method, while more resource-intensive, is the only one that fully preserves the natural structure, color, and mechanical properties of the solid wood. Sawn lamella is visually and tactilely indistinguishable from solid wood.
  • Sliced Veneer. This is made by slicing steamed wooden blocks. The sheets are cut at different angles to the growth rings, which allows for various textures: radial, tangential, and semi-radial. However, the thermal treatment (steaming) can change the wood’s natural shade, which is a critical consideration for woods like cherry.
  • Rotary-Cut Veneer. This is the most economical method. In this process, a debarked log is rotated on its axis while a knife peels off a continuous, thin sheet. This results in cuts with an unnaturally wavy pattern.

Key Advantages of Cherry Lamella for Manufacturing

Using sawn cherry veneer is a strategic decision that gives your products a competitive edge. This lumber product is chosen for its combination of the following characteristics:

  • Stability. Thanks to its significant thickness and preserved fiber structure, the lamella is resistant to mechanical damage. It is suitable for veneering surfaces with high operational loads, including countertops, flooring, stairs, and doors.
  • Natural appearance. Products veneered with sawn veneer look as if they were made from solid wood, allowing for the creation of high-class products with an optimized cost.
  • Finishing possibilities. The surface of the lamella can be perfectly sanded, polished, stained, lacquered, or oiled. This simplifies both the implementation of complex design solutions and subsequent restoration.
  • Easy integration into production. Sawn cherry veneer is easy to process with standard woodworking equipment and does not require additional investment in new technological lines.
  • Rational use of resources. Using veneer allows for much more efficient use of valuable wood. One cubic meter of cherry can provide facing material for dozens of products.

The Production Technology of Cherry Sawn Veneer

The sawn veneer manufacturing process is a precise sequence of operations aimed at preserving the natural properties of the wood. The production of this lumber consists of the following steps:

  1. Raw material selection. We only use high-quality sawn boards that have been pre-inspected for critical defects. The quality of the finished product depends on the grade of the boards.
  2. Kiln drying. The wood undergoes a full drying cycle in a kiln to reach a stable moisture content of 8-10% for woodworking. Kiln drying ensures uniformly dried and stable solid wood.
  3. Calibration. The dried boards are jointed and calibrated to the size of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. The blanks are cut into lamellas on a Wintersteiger machine, which guarantees a uniform thickness along the entire length of the sheet.
  5. Sorting. The finished veneer is sorted according to its grade, then stacked into packages. Pallets are then formed from these packages.

Grades of Cherry Sawn Veneer

We offer three grades of lamella. Choosing the right quality lumber allows you to optimize your budget and create a product that meets your desired technical and aesthetic requirements. Detailed characteristics of the grades are listed in the table below.

Grade Description and Recommended Use
A Uniform, consistent texture with minimal color variation. A few healthy knots up to 10 mm in diameter are permissible. Suitable for premium furniture fronts, countertops, and other projects where a flawless appearance is essential.
B A more affordable option that retains optimal technical characteristics. Natural variations in color and texture are possible, as well as black knots up to 5 mm in diameter. Used for flooring, stair components, and products where aesthetic quality is not the highest priority.
Rustic The most affordable material, which showcases the natural beauty of the wood: pronounced color variations, various knots (including dark, partially loose, and intergrown), small cracks, and resin pockets. Suitable for products in the loft, country, industrial, and chalet styles.

The choice of sawn veneer grade determines the final appearance of the product, its durability, and ease of use. Grade A lamella is suitable for manufacturing premium furniture. Grade B is versatile and used for most woodworking tasks, while “Rustic” is an excellent solution for projects with a distinctive texture and unique design.

Characteristics of Cherry Wood

Cherry (Prunus avium) is one of the most valuable and popular materials in the production of furniture, interior items, and decorative products. The wood is known for its warm color palette, smooth texture, and ease of processing.

Visual Characteristics

  • The heartwood of cherry has a characteristic color, ranging from a light pink-brown to a rich red-brown. The wood darkens over time. The narrow sapwood has pale yellow or creamy tones.
  • The grain is usually straight and even, which makes the wood easy to work with. Wavy sections can sometimes be found. The texture is uniform, with small pores. Large knots are rare.
  • Small resin pockets are common in cherry.

Technical Parameters

  • The average density of dry cherry is 580 kg/m³, meaning the species is relatively light and stable.
  • Janka hardness is 1,150 lbf, and Brinell hardness is 3.2.
  • Cherry has medium shock resistance: it can withstand moderate loads.
  • The wood bends well with steam.

Processing Features

  • This fruitwood is easily processed with both manual and mechanical tools. Thanks to its straight grain, it provides a clean cut and a smooth surface.
  • Cherry sands to a smooth finish.
  • The material glues and holds fasteners well.
  • The solid wood takes stains, oils, and lacquers. However, when using dark stains, the wood may be prone to blotching. To avoid this, it is recommended to use a special pre-stain conditioner.

Main Uses of Cherry Sawn Veneer

Cherry sawn lamella is a premium facing material used wherever the aesthetics of solid wood, stability, and durability are required.

  • Parquet flooring. Cherry sawn lamella is an exclusive material for the top layer of parquet flooring. The distinct, natural pattern of this valuable wood gives the surface a premium look.
  • Countertops. Sawn veneer sheets are suitable for veneering the surfaces of bar and reception counters, dining and work tables, and kitchen islands.
  • Stair treads. Stair treads veneered with cherry are resistant to abrasion and can withstand the loads of residential use. Oiling and lacquering extend the service life of the surface.
  • Furniture fronts. Sawn lamella is used for veneering the doors of cabinets, tall units, dressers, and chests. The wood-veneered surface is easy to stain and lacquer, allowing the furniture to be adapted for various design projects.
  • Doors and partitions. Sawn veneer is suitable for manufacturing interior doors and partitions. Cherry-veneered room dividers, screens, and interior walls help to efficiently zone space in offices, compact apartments, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall panels. Cherry is considered an analog to mahogany. Sheets of this decorative and valuable solid wood are used to create wall panels that fit harmoniously into both classic and modern interiors.
  • Decor. Sawn lamella is widely used in the craft industry. Masters use sheets of cherry to create picture and photo frames, organizers, boxes, figurines, candle holders, and clocks.

With sawn lamella, you can bring projects of various scales to life. This lumber is suitable for both mass production and individual projects.
