Characteristics of Grade 1 (A/B) Hornbeam Edge-Glued Panels

In the context of finger-jointed hornbeam panels, Grade 1 is determined by the visual characteristics of the surfaces, not by strength parameters. All panels are manufactured using the same technology and possess high strength.

So, what do Grade 1 (A/B) finger-jointed panels look like?

  • The face and back sides are clean, without visible wood defects, scratches, dents, cracks, chips, or tool marks.
  • Sound knots are permissible (1-2 per panel). Unsound, black knots are not allowed.
  • Uniformity of color and texture. The lamellas are carefully matched for color and grain pattern. There are no sharp tonal variations between adjacent segments.
  • No sapwood (the lighter, less dense part of the wood adjacent to the bark).
  • Glue lines are inconspicuous. The surface is free of glue, gaps, or delamination.

Production Technology of Finger-Jointed Hornbeam Edge-Glued Panels

  • Wood Drying. The lamellas are made from kiln-dried boards with a moisture content of 8-10%, which ensures the material’s stability.
  • Lamella Sawing. The wood is sawn into strips of a specific thickness and width. Modern machinery guarantees precise dimensions for each segment.
  • Sorting. The finished lamellas are sorted by quality and size, and strips with defects are removed.
  • Milling the Micro-Finger Joint. A special toothed joint—the micro-finger joint—is formed on the ends of the lamellas to ensure maximum glue surface area.
  • Joining the Segments. The lamellas are glued together lengthwise and widthwise under a press using environmentally friendly adhesives that meet strength and safety standards.
  • Calibrating and Sanding. The finished panel is calibrated to the required dimensions and sanded to prepare the surface for further finishing.

Advantages of Hornbeam Edge-Glued Panels Over Solid Wood

  1. Stability. The wooden lamellas are made from boards dried to an optimal moisture level (8-10%). Kiln drying the wood eliminates internal stresses that cause deformation in solid wood. Thus, the finger-jointed panel is not prone to warping or cracking due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
  2. Structural Uniformity. The finger-jointing process allows for the creation of a uniform, defect-free surface.
  3. Wear Resistance. The load is distributed evenly across the material’s surface. The structure of multi-directional segments “dissipates” point stresses and prevents pressure from concentrating in one spot. As a result, the panel maintains its integrity even under significant loads.
  4. Optimal Use of Raw Materials. The finger-jointing technology allows for the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste and making production more efficient and environmentally friendly.
  5. Aesthetics. The wooden lamellas that make up the panel retain the wood’s texture. The joining process creates a parquet-like pattern that can be an interesting design element.

Applications of Hornbeam Edge-Glued Panels

This strong and stable material is used to create products such as:

  • countertops for desks, kitchen workspaces, and bar counters;
  • treads for interior stairs;
  • furniture fronts: doors for cabinets, dressers, nightstands, and pantry units;
  • bed headboards;
  • seats for bar stools, benches, and stools;
  • windowsills in homes and offices;
  • decorative wall panels.

Hornbeam Wood: Characteristics

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is an accessible commercial species. The wood has a light gray or whitish-yellow color that changes very little over time. The texture of hornbeam is very fine, uniform, and dense, with barely visible annual rings.

With a density of 750-800 kg/m³ and a Brinell hardness of 3.7, the solid wood demonstrates significant resistance to abrasion, impact loads, and deformation. The wood becomes stronger after drying. Hornbeam is not always easy to cut by hand, but the species machines, sands, and polishes wonderfully. Hornbeam is chosen for manufacturing parquet flooring, furniture, and parts in mechanical engineering.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do we guarantee product quality?
