Olive Ash Wood

Olive Ash (Fraxinus) is not a separate tree species. It is a unique variety of common ash that forms due to a combination of its growing location and climatic conditions. The unique wood pattern appears because the heartwood acquires darker shades. This makes the material valuable for the production of furniture, doors, and interior elements.

Technical Characteristics

Density. The average density of dry solid ash is about 660-700 kg/m³.

Hardness. Olive Ash is a hardwood. Its Janka hardness is 1320 lbf, and its Brinell hardness is 4.0. These figures indicate significant wear resistance.

Toughness. Ash is a tough wood that can withstand shock loads. In this regard, it surpasses many other hardwood species.

Elasticity. The modulus of elasticity for ash is approximately 12.6 GPa. After steam treatment, the wood can be bent, which is why solid ash is often used for creating furniture.

Texture Features

Color. The sapwood has a creamy hue. The heartwood color ranges from light brown to dark olive. Olive Ash is distinguished by a contrasting pattern with dark streaks.

Grain. The grain is straight. The texture is pronounced.

Pores. Ash has large pores, which give the wood a distinctive texture.

Knots. The number of knots in ash is usually small.

Processing

Drying. Ash wood requires slow drying in compliance with the proper technology.

Machining. This hard wood machines well: it is easy to cut, mill, polish, and sand.

Staining. Experienced craftsmen recommend using proven products when staining ash.

Finishing. The wood holds finishes excellently.

What is Sliced Olive Ash Veneer?

Sliced veneer is a thin sheet of wood obtained by slicing a log. This facing material preserves the natural pattern and texture of the wood. On average, about 850 m² of 0.55 mm (0.021″) thick veneer can be produced from 1 cubic meter of wood. The amount of veneer depends on the geometry of the log, the presence of natural defects, processing losses, and the quality of the raw material.

The main stages of manufacturing natural sliced veneer are:

  1. Raw Material Preparation. First, the bark is removed from the log, after which it is steamed or boiled in hot water. This process softens the wood, which facilitates processing and prevents cracking.
  2. Slicing. The prepared log is secured in a special machine where a large knife slices thin sheets of wood from it. The thickness of the veneer can vary from 0.5 mm to 3 mm depending on the intended use of the material.
  3. Drying. The resulting veneer sheets are dried in special conveyor kilns to even out the moisture content and stabilize the material’s structure.
  4. Trimming. The dried material is stacked into bundles of 32 sheets and sent for trimming with a guillotine. The machine has a massive blade that descends vertically to make a perfectly straight cut through the entire bundle. The veneer sheets are trimmed around the perimeter to get perfectly straight edges. Material with straight edges ensures precise joints and high-quality veneering.
  5. Sorting and Packaging. The veneer is sorted by quality, color, and pattern. Sorting can also be done by log, width, or length. The selected sheets are stacked into bundles and formed into pallets.

Types of Cut

The cutting method determines not only the pattern but also the properties of the material. Types of cuts differ by the angle at which the knife cuts the wood.

Radial Cut (Quarter Sliced)

The cut is made perpendicular to the annual rings, straight from the center of the log. The pattern is characterized by straight, parallel lines. Veneer obtained this way is stable and not prone to deformation with changes in humidity.

Raz

Tangential Cut (Plain Sliced)

The cut is made parallel to the annual rings, tangential to them. A pronounced arched or dome-shaped pattern forms on the veneer surface. This pattern is the most characteristic of wood.

Dva

Half-Radial Cut (Rift Sliced)

The cut is made at an angle of 30° to 60° to the annual rings. The pattern combines elements of the two previous types of cuts. The pattern is softer and more varied than a purely radial cut, but less chaotic than a tangential one.

Tri

Tangential-End Cut

The cut is made perpendicular to the annual rings, but the slice passes through the end grain of the log. The resulting pattern is as follows: the annual layers are represented as closed curved lines, and the medullary rays as curved lines or dashes.

Grade B Natural Olive Ash Veneer

Veneer is graded by its appearance. This classification helps manufacturers and craftsmen choose the veneer that best meets their needs and budget. Our stock program includes three grades of sliced veneer: A, B, and A/B.

Grade B has minor defects that do not affect the material’s strength. It is suitable for veneering interior surfaces, as well as for projects where a “living” wood texture is important. The following are permissible:

  • Knots up to 5 mm in diameter of various types: sound, partially intergrown, and loose;
  • Color variations;
  • Resin pockets, 1 per 1 sq. m;
  • Minor cracks.

Types of  Alder Veneer Matching

The type of face assembly determines how the veneer sheets are arranged on the product’s surface. The placement of the sheets affects the pattern. The following are the main methods of assembling veneer faces:

Book Match

Every other sheet is flipped 180°, creating a symmetrical “mirrored” pattern.

Slip Match

Sheets are laid one after another without flipping. This creates minimal variations in tone and texture.

Slip and Turn Match

Sheets are rotated 180° lengthwise. This method ensures a uniform pattern and tone.

Reverse Slip Match

Every other sheet is flipped 180° face up, which creates a uniform pattern and tone across the panel.

Random Match

The face is assembled from different bundles of veneer. The sheets are chosen randomly, creating a unique, chaotic pattern.

Pleasing Match

Sheets are combined based on similar coloring but different grain. The material is taken from veneer bundles from the same log.

Applications of Sliced Olive Ash Veneer

Sliced veneer is a versatile material that allows products made from various materials, such as particleboard, MDF, or plywood, to have the aesthetic of natural wood. These thin wood slices are used in the furniture industry, interior decorating, candle making, and more.

The main areas of application are:

  1. Furniture. Natural material is used to face cabinet furniture. Thanks to veneer, wardrobes, tables, dressers, nightstands, cabinets, and vanities take on the appearance of solid wood furniture while remaining lightweight and affordable.
  2. Wall Panels. Wood-faced wall panels are relevant in both modern and classic interiors. Depending on the face pattern, you can create an accent or a neutral panel.
  3. Screens and Room Dividers. Partitions and screens decorated with natural veneer not only allow for the creation of functional zones but can also become an important detail of a design project.
  4. Architectural Elements. Veneer is used for facing baseboards, arches, and other interior elements. This helps maintain a consistent style.
  5. Souvenirs and Home Decor. Veneer is a popular material for making souvenirs and various decor items. Sheets of wood allow for the creation of unique, aesthetic, and ecological products: boxes, frames for photos and pictures, figurines, napkin holders, etc.
  6. Lighting Elements. Veneer is used for lampshades. A thin sheet of wood softly diffuses light, creating a cozy atmosphere.
  7. Wooden Wicks for Candles. Wicks made from veneer burn slowly and evenly, without producing excess smoke or soot.
