Characteristics of Grade 3 (B/C) Pine Furniture Panels

In the context of finger-jointed pine furniture panels, Grade 3 is defined by the visual characteristics of its surfaces, not by its strength parameters. All panels are manufactured using the same technology and possess high strength.

The Grade 3 (B/C) furniture panel is the lowest in terms of appearance quality. The material has the maximum allowable number of natural wood defects. The product is cost-effective but requires additional finishing.

Features of Grade 3 furniture panels include:

  • Presence of large knots, including both sound and black knots. Large knots may be filled with putty.
  • Sapwood is permitted, sometimes up to 75% on a lamella. Sapwood has a lighter shade compared to heartwood and can create significant contrast.
  • No matching of lamellas for pattern, tone, or texture. The panel can be very non-uniform in color, with pronounced transitions between lamellas.
  • Minor chips on the surface or edges, non-through cracks (especially near knots), and mechanical damage are permitted.
  • Bark and rot are not permitted.

Manufacturing Technology of Finger-Jointed Pine Furniture Panels

  • Wood Drying. Lamellas are made from kiln-dried boards with a moisture content of 8-10%, which ensures the material’s stability.
  • Sawing of Lamellas. The wood is sawn into boards of a specific thickness and width. Modern machinery guarantees precise dimensions for each segment.
  • Sorting. The finished lamellas are sorted by quality and size; boards with defects are removed.
  • Milling the Finger Joint. A special toothed connection—the finger joint—is formed on the ends of the lamellas to ensure the maximum bonding area.
  • Joining the Segments. The lamellas are glued together lengthwise and widthwise under a press using environmentally friendly adhesives that meet strength and safety standards.
  • Calibrating and Sanding. The finished panel is calibrated to obtain the required dimensions and sanded to prepare the surface for further finishing.

Kiln drying the wood eliminates internal stresses, which are the cause of deformation in solid wood.   2. Structural Uniformity. Thanks to the jointing process, it is possible to create a uniform, defect-free surface.
  3. Wear Resistance. The load is evenly distributed across the material’s surface. The structure of multi-directional segments “dissipates” point stresses and prevents pressure concentration in one place. As a result, the panel maintains its integrity even under significant loads.
  4. Optimal Use of Raw Materials. The finger-jointing technology allows for the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste and making production more effective and environmentally friendly.
  5. Aesthetics. The wooden lamellas that make up the panel retain the texture of the wood. The jointing process creates a parquet-like pattern that can be an interesting design element.

The heartwood palette consists of pinkish-red tones that darken over time. Pine has a distinct and uneven texture with prominent annual rings and straight grain.

The average density is approximately 520 kg/m³, and the Brinell hardness is 2.5. The soft wood is easy to work with: it can be sawn, planed, milled, lacquered, and stained. Due to its resin content, it may require a preliminary primer.
