Advantages of Sawn Acacia Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is a type of lumber obtained by sawing a solid piece of wood on a special machine. The thickness of a lamella is usually between 2 and 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the wood’s natural grain, color, and texture.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and durability. Thanks to its considerable thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishes.
  2. Natural aesthetics. Sawn veneer retains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-friendliness. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to use industrial timber.
  4. Wide application. Sawn veneer is used to create various millwork products, from furniture fronts and engineered wood flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape, making them suitable for use in residential and public spaces.
  6. Easy to work with. Sawn veneer is easy to process. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and lacquered.

Sawn Acacia Veneer, Grade B

Grade B sawn veneer is lower in price compared to Grade A but retains all the main advantages of sawn veneer.

Characteristics of Grade B lamella:

  • Black knots up to 5 mm / 0.2″ in diameter are permissible on the surface. The number of knots is not strictly regulated, but there are requirements for their placement. Knots should not be located close to each other or to the edges, so as not to reduce the strength of the lamella.
  • Color changes and noticeable tone variations are possible.
  • Natural non-uniform texture.

This material is used for projects where aesthetic requirements are not strict or for products where natural features are part of the design.

The Production Technology of Sawn Acacia Lamella

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of the lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Boards of the highest or first grade are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying allows for the production of solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8–10%. Drying that follows the proper technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next stage is board calibration. The material is adjusted to the size of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of a specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for size and quality compliance. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked in bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium facing material, the production of which is focused on quality and preserving the wood’s properties.

Uses of Sawn Acacia Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with type of lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Engineered Wood Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered wood flooring. The wood sheets make multilayer flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Tabletops. Lamellas are used for finishing the tops of desks and dining tables, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and store counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella veneer gives furniture a solid look. It’s an ideal choice for cabinets, dressers, and armoires. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and is easily stained and lacquered.
  • Stair Treads for Interior Stairs. Due to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for cladding stairs. A thickness of 2–10 mm is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial premises. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. These non-load-bearing structures help to zone spaces and often play an important role in the interior design of smart apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wooden lamellas are used to create wall panels with unique patterns. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative canvas with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to make a variety of small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wooden lamella is the foundation for various millwork products. High-quality facing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used wherever not only the beauty of the wood but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress are required.

Acacia Wood: Key Characteristics

Acacia (Acacia) is one of the strongest and densest species that grows in temperate climates. Its exceptional hardness, durability, and resistance to decay make the wood an ideal material for exterior work, flooring, furniture, and decorative products.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry wood is 800 kg/m³.
  • Its Janka hardness is 19,400 lbf and its Brinell hardness is 7.1. These figures indicate significant wood hardness. Acacia is harder than oak and beech and is resistant to wear, impacts, and scratches.
  • Acacia has high toughness, which makes it resistant to splitting.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • Acacia grain is usually straight, but sometimes trunks with wavy grain are found. The wood has a pronounced texture with clearly visible growth rings.
  • The narrow sapwood is colored in pale yellow or creamy shades. The heartwood’s color palette ranges from light brown to golden brown, sometimes with olive or greenish streaks.
  • Acacia has distinct pores similar to those of oak.

Processing Features

  • After kiln drying, the wood becomes stable.
  • The dense and hard wood can be difficult to process. Craftsmen use sharp and strong tools to work with acacia. The wood can be sanded, and after polishing, the surface acquires a sheen.
  • Acacia takes lacquers and oils well, which highlight its color.
  • Thanks to its resistance to decay, acacia is suitable for exterior work, such as making decks, garden furniture, and fences. Solid acacia is also an excellent choice for flooring, furniture, and lathe-turned items.
