Advantages of Elm Sawn Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber obtained by sawing solid wood on special equipment. The thickness of a lamella typically ranges from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the pattern, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Due to its sufficient thickness, the lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer preserves the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendly. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to use industrial wood.
  4. Wide Application. Sawn veneer is used to create a variety of wood products: from furniture fronts and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape and are suitable for use in residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and lacquered.

Elm Sawn Veneer, Grade A

Classification by grade allows for an assessment of the quality and appearance of the lumber. Grade A is the highest quality category.

Features of Grade A sawn veneer:

  • Sound white knots up to 1 cm / 0.39″ in diameter are allowed, with 2-3 knots per linear meter / 39.37″.
  • The texture is uniform, and the grain is straight.
  • Slight natural variations in shade are possible.

This veneer is ideal for creating premium products where a flawless appearance is essential.

Technology for Manufacturing Elm Sawn Lamella

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of the lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Grade A or B boards are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8–10%, which is ideal for woodworking. Drying the wood using this technology relieves internal tension and prevents the lumber from warping.
  3. Stock Preparation. The next stage is to prepare the boards. The material is dimensioned to fit the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and sawn into sheets of a specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with size and quality standards. After being sorted by grade, the lamellas are stacked into bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium finishing material, the production of which is focused on quality and the preservation of wood properties.

Uses of Elm Sawn Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Parquet Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of parquet flooring. The sheets of wood make the multi-layered flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Tabletops. Lamella is used to finish tabletops for writing desks and dining tables, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and store counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. A lamella finish gives furniture a solid, substantial look. It’s an excellent choice for cabinets, dressers, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and moisture fluctuations and is easily stained and lacquered.
  • Indoor Stair Treads. Due to its high strength and durability, sawn veneer is a popular material for finishing stairs. A thickness of 2–10 mm is sufficient to withstand the operational load in townhomes, country houses, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. These non-load-bearing structures help to zone a space and often play an important role in the interior design of smart apartments, offices, and showrooms.
  • Wall Panels. Wood lamellas are used to create unique wall panels. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different types of textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to make a variety of small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the foundation for various woodworking products. High-quality finishing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design concepts. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress are needed.

Elm Wood: Key Characteristics

Elm (Ulmus minor) is a deciduous species prized for its strength, elasticity, and distinct texture. Elm is a common species in Europe, North Africa, and Western Asia. The tree is often found in river floodplains and on fertile soils.

Technical Specifications

  • The average density of dry elm wood is approximately 650–690 kg/m³.
  • Janka hardness is 810 lbf, and Brinell hardness is 3.4–3.7.
  • Elm is highly viscous and elastic, making it resistant to splitting.

Texture, Pattern, and Color

  • Elm fibers are often wavy and interlocked, which creates a complex pattern. Because of this feature, the wood is less prone to splitting.
  • The color of the sapwood is pale white or yellowish-white. The heartwood ranges from light brown to dark brown, sometimes with reddish or greenish streaks.
  • Elm has a distinct texture due to its large pores.

Processing Characteristics

  • Due to its interlocked grain, the wood can be difficult to work with. To make working with elm easier and to avoid chipping, use sharp tools. The solid wood is well-suited for turning and bending. The wood can be sanded and polished.
  • The species accepts various finishes without issue, from oils and waxes to lacquers, which helps to accentuate its unique pattern.
