Advantages of Sawn Maple Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is a type of lumber produced by sawing solid wood on specialized equipment. Lamella thickness typically ranges from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078-0.39″. Sawn veneer preserves the wood’s grain, color, and texture.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Due to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishes.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer retains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-friendliness. These thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to use industrial timber.
  4. Wide Range of Applications. Sawn veneer is used for creating various millwork products, from furniture fronts and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape, making them suitable for use in residential and public spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and lacquered.

Grade B Sawn Maple Veneer

Grade B sawn veneer is priced lower than Grade A but retains all the main benefits of sawn veneer.

Characteristics of Grade B lamella:

  • Black knots up to 5 mm / 0.2″ in diameter are permitted on the surface. The number of knots is not strictly regulated, but their placement is. Knots must not be too close to each other or to the edges to avoid compromising the lamella’s strength.
  • Color variations and noticeable tone shifts are possible.
  • Natural non-uniformity of the texture.

This material is used for projects where aesthetic requirements are not strict, or for products where natural features are part of the design.

Manufacturing Technology for Sawn Maple Lamella

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of the lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Boards of the highest or first grade are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying allows for a solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10%. Drying that follows the proper technology releases internal stress from the wood and prevents material deformation.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next stage is calibrating the boards. The material is adjusted to the size of the saw blade cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with dimensions and quality. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked into bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium finishing material, the production of which is focused on quality and the preservation of wood properties.

Uses for Sawn Maple Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Parquet Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of parquet flooring. The wood sheets give the multi-layered flooring an aesthetic look.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used to finish countertops for desks and dining tables, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and store displays.
  • Furniture Fronts. A lamella finish gives furniture a solid appearance. It is an ideal choice for cabinets, dressers, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and moisture changes and is easily stained and lacquered.
  • Stair Treads for Interior Stairs. Due to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for finishing stairs. A thickness of 2-10 mm is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. These non-load-bearing structures help to zone spaces and often play an important role in the interior design of studios, offices, and showrooms.
  • Wall Panels. Wall panels with unique patterns are created from wood lamellas. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to create various small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the basis for a variety of millwork products. High-quality finishing material allows for the realization of the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is required, but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Maple Wood: Characteristics

Maple (Acer) is a hardwood species prized for its hardness, strength, and light color. The wood is a versatile material used in the production of furniture, musical instruments, flooring, and sports equipment. Maple is widespread in North America, Europe, and Asia. In Europe, the most common species are sycamore maple (Acer pseudoplatanus) and Norway maple (Acer platanoides), while in North America, it is sugar maple (Acer saccharum).

Technical Specifications

  • The average density of dry wood is approximately 650-700 kg/m³.
  • Janka hardness is 1450 lbf, and Brinell hardness is 3.8-4.1.
  • Maple has high toughness and elasticity, allowing it to withstand significant mechanical stress.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • The grain is usually straight, with a fine and uniform texture. Sometimes, logs with curly grain are found. Wavy and interlocked fibers form unique patterns, such as “bird’s eye,” “wavy/quilted” maple, etc.
  • The sapwood is wide and light, with creamy and white shades prevailing. The heartwood’s color often does not differ from the sapwood, but sometimes wood with a light brown to reddish-brown color is found.
  • Maple has small pores, which allows for a smooth surface after sanding.

Processing Features

  • For working with this hardwood, it is recommended to use sharp tools. Maple can be turned, milled, cut, and sanded.
  • The wood accepts various finishes well, including lacquers, oils, waxes, and stains.
