Custom Lamella Production: Tailored to Your Needs

With over 30 years of experience working with manufacturers, we understand that different projects require different materials. We are ready to produce sawn elm veneer on an individual basis. The available parameters for custom wood products are:

  • Thickness: 2 to 10 mm (0.078–0.39 inches).
  • Width: 10 to 21 cm (3.94–8.27 inches).
  • Length: 0.3 to 3.5 m (11.81–137.8 inches).

The minimum order volume for custom production is one pallet of a single grade.

Sawn Veneer vs. Other Veneer Types: Understanding the Technology

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is a facing lumber product created by sawing calibrated, dry boards. The product retains the look and texture of solid wood. To appreciate the unique advantages of sawn lamella, it’s important to understand the technological differences from other types of veneer.

  1. Sliced Veneer. Produced by slicing steamed logs. Thin sheets of wood are cut from prepared logs at a specific angle relative to the annual rings. This method allows for different textures (radial, semi-radial, tangential), but the color of the material may change after heat treatment.
  2. Rotary-Cut Veneer. An economically efficient wood processing method that resembles sharpening a pencil or unwinding a roll. A debarked log rotates around its axis, and a long blade cuts a continuous ribbon. The result is a material with an unnaturally wavy pattern that looks visually different from the texture of solid wood.
  3. Sawn Veneer (Lamella). Produced by longitudinally sawing boards that have been kiln-dried. While this is a more costly process, the resulting material accurately reproduces the texture and natural color of solid wood.

Key Advantages of Sawn Elm Lamella

Using sawn elm veneer is a strategic decision that ensures product quality, durability, and aesthetics. This material is chosen for producing furniture and interior elements due to:

  • Stability. With sufficient thickness and preserved fiber structure, the material is resistant to mechanical damage, chipping, and fluctuations in temperature and humidity indoors. This wood product is chosen for facing surfaces that are subject to intense use (countertops, stairs, floors, doors).
  • Authentic Appearance. Products faced with elm lamella are visually and tactilely indistinguishable from their solid wood counterparts. Businesses have the opportunity to create premium products at a lower cost.
  • Processing Versatility. The surface of the lamella is easy to sand, stain, lacquer, or finish with oil. This makes it possible to execute complex design solutions and simplifies restoration.
  • Manufacturing Efficiency. Sawn elm veneer is easily processed with standard woodworking tools, allowing the material to be integrated into any production cycle without additional costs.
  • Eco-friendliness. Using veneer significantly increases the efficiency of wood usage. From one cubic meter of solid wood, you can get enough facing material for dozens of products.

Sawn Elm Veneer Production Technology

Manufacturing sawn veneer is a multi-stage process that requires modern equipment and strict quality control. The technology allows for the creation of a finishing material that maximally preserves the natural characteristics of the wood.

The stages of sawn veneer production are as follows:

  1. Raw Material Selection. Boards are selected for lamella production without critical defects, as the quality of the final product directly depends on the quality of the initial material.
  2. Kiln Drying. The selected wood is dried in special kilns to an optimal woodworking moisture level of 8–10%. Kiln drying ensures uniform drying of the wood and guarantees the stability of the finished lamella.
  3. Calibration. The dry boards are prepared for loading into the machines. The lumber is planed and calibrated to create blanks that match the dimensions of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. The prepared boards are fed into a Wintersteiger machine. After setting the sawing parameters, the wood is cut into thin sheets—lamella. Professional equipment ensures a uniform thickness for each cut.
  5. Sorting. The finished product is sorted by grade, then bundled, and the bundles are stacked on pallets.

Sawn Elm Veneer: Grades

Understanding the grades of sawn lamella is a key factor in choosing the right material. Properly selected facing material helps not only achieve the desired aesthetic result but also optimize production costs.

We offer sawn elm veneer in three grades, each designed for specific tasks.

Grade Characteristics
A The optimal material for projects where appearance is of primary importance. It features a uniform texture with predominantly straight grains and an even color. Only a few small, healthy knots are permitted, with a maximum diameter of 10 mm and no more than 2–3 per linear meter.
B A more affordable lamella that retains optimal technical characteristics. Suitable for millwork where aesthetic qualities are not the top priority. Possible natural textural variations, more noticeable color changes, and dark knots up to 5 mm in diameter, which are spaced far enough from each other and from the edge.
Rustic Used for projects that emphasize the unique texture and natural features of the wood. This grade is the most affordable and is suitable for loft, country, industrial, and chalet styles. Characterized by pronounced texture, significant color variations, the presence of various types of knots (sound, dark, loose, with cracks), small surface cracks, and resin pockets.

You should choose the grade of sawn veneer based on three main criteria: product design, usage conditions, and budget.

Elm (Ulmus) Wood Characteristics

Elm (Ulmus) is a hard and strong wood that is valued in the millwork and furniture industries for its unique combination of aesthetics, toughness, and resistance to splitting.

Texture and Color

  • Elm has a clear grain pattern with a distinct, coarse texture. Large open pores are visible on the tangential cut. The presence of knots adds a natural and unique look to the products.
  • The sapwood is light: almost white or grayish-white. The heartwood is colored in darker shades, varying from light brown to reddish-brown or chocolate.

Technical Parameters

  • The density of dry wood is 650–680 kg/m³.
  • The Janka hardness is 810–860 lbf, and the Brinell hardness is 3.8.
  • Elm wood is tough and elastic, which makes it resistant to splitting and allows for the creation of parts with curved shapes.

Processing Features

  • Elm is easily processed with standard woodworking tools.
  • The hard wood can be cut, milled, and glued, and it holds fasteners well.
  • The wood can be sanded, polished, stained, and finished with waxes, oils, and lacquers.

Sawn Elm Veneer Applications

Sawn lamella is not only a premium facing material. A range of structural and decorative products are also made from this wood product. Let’s take a closer look at the main areas where sawn veneer is used. The material is involved in the production of:

  • Engineered Flooring. Elm lamella is an optimal material for the top layer of engineered flooring. The hard, dense wood with its expressive grain gives the flooring a natural look and contributes to its longevity.
  • Countertops. Strong sheets of wood are often used to face countertops for dining and office desks, retail counters, reception and bar counters, kitchen islands, and other work surfaces.
  • Indoor Stairs. Sawn veneer from hardwoods is considered an optimal material for facing indoor stair treads. The wooden lamella is resistant to abrasion and heavy use, allowing the stairs to maintain a pristine appearance for a long time. Applying a final protective coating, such as lacquer or oil, further increases the durability and strength of the surface.
  • Furniture Fronts. Sawn lamella is used to finish the doors of cabinets, dressers, and other case goods. The surface faced with solid wood can be easily stained and lacquered, allowing for the creation of furniture with a unique design.
  • Doors and Partitions. This wood product is suitable for manufacturing interior doors and partitions. Elm-faced interior walls, dividers, and screens help to zone spaces in open-plan offices, studio apartments, and waiting rooms.
  • Wall Panels. Thanks to its expressive texture, sheets of sawn elm veneer are chosen for finishing exclusive interior panels that fit well into both classic and modern styles.
  • Decor and Household Items. Sawn lamella is a universal material for woodworkers and crafters. From this wood product, they create organizers, boxes, cases, photo frames, candlesticks, clocks, figurines, lamps, and more.

Sawn elm lamella is equally suitable for both mass production and individual projects.
