Ash Wood: Key Characteristics

Ash (Fraxinus) is a valuable hardwood actively used by European and American woodworkers. Thanks to its combination of strength, elasticity, and aesthetic appeal, ash is an indispensable material for creating durable and elegant products.

1 13

Technical Parameters of Solid Ash

  • The density of solid ash in a dry state is approximately 690 kg/m³. Its Janka hardness rating is 1320 lbf, and its Brinell hardness is 4.0.
  • The wood has moderate toughness and exceptional flexibility. The species bends easily after steam treatment, allowing for the creation of curved elements. This property makes ash an optimal choice for manufacturing chairs, sports equipment, and other products.

Appearance of Ash Wood

  • The sapwood of ash is light, with predominantly white and cream shades. The heartwood palette consists of brown tones, from light to dark.
  • Ash has a distinct texture. The grain is straight, but areas with interlocked or irregular grain can sometimes be found. The pattern of the solid wood is formed by clear annual rings. Figured grain is not typical for this species. Small, sound knots may be present on the surface.

Processing Specifics

  • Ash wood is easy to saw, mill, sand, and drill. The solid hardwood holds fasteners well and glues easily.
  • Ash takes varnish, oils, and stains well. The light-colored wood can be tinted in a wide range of shades to fit products into various design styles.

Features of Grade 1 Edged Ash Lumber

Grade 1 edged boards are used in furniture manufacturing, joinery, interior finishing, and other applications where both performance and aesthetic qualities are important.

Key characteristics of Grade 1 edged boards:

  • Sound knots up to 1 cm (0.39″) in diameter are permitted, with a maximum of 2-3 knots per linear meter (39.37″).
  • The wood texture is uniform, and the grain is straight.
  • Minor natural variations in shade are possible.

What is Edged Ash Lumber?

An edged board is a piece of lumber from which the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. High-quality logs are selected for the production of edged lumber. The raw material is sawn into boards, considering the grain direction and the required thickness and length. Then, the blanks pass through machines where the remaining bark is removed and straight edges are formed. The moisture content of the wood is brought to an optimal 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry joinery boards are then sorted by grade, assessing color, grain structure, and the number and type of knots.

How Does Kiln Drying Work?

Our in-stock program features kiln-dried edged lumber. Kiln drying of wood is a high-tech, controlled process. Unlike air drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees stable, uniformly dried material with an optimal joinery moisture content of 8-12%.

2 13

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns are:

  1. Loading the Lumber. The boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows to allow free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly used for hardwoods like oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and equalizes moisture content, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity inside the kiln are controlled by a computer and changed according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly monitor the wood’s condition. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, dry wood is treated with steam. Then, the boards are gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient environment (approximately 35–45 °C or 95-113 °F) to avoid condensation.

Kiln-dried edged boards are ideal for making furniture, doors and other interior elements. Wood with joinery-level moisture content is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.

Advantages of Edged Ash Lumber

  1. Versatility of Application. The material is suitable for both mass production of furniture and individual craft projects.
  2. Stability. Kiln drying produces uniformly dried and stable solid boards that are ready for further mechanical processing.
  3. Reduced Waste and Cost-Effectiveness. High-quality primary processing of the lumber reduces the amount of waste and increases the raw material utilization rate. This means you only pay for the usable volume of material, which is especially important in mass production.
  4. Streamlined Production Processes. Lumber with pre-processed side edges reduces cutting time and optimizes production workflows. Edged boards are easy to plane, mill, sand, stain, varnish, and paint.
  5. Convenient Logistics and Storage. Thanks to their regular shape, the boards are easy to stack, which saves warehouse space, simplifies transportation, and reduces logistics costs.

Applications of Edged Ash Lumber

Edged lumber is one of the most popular materials in the woodworking industry. Below are the areas where this natural material is actively used.

3 13

Furniture Manufacturing

Edged boards are used in the production of carcasses and fronts for cabinets, dressers, and nightstands, and tables, chairs, beds, ottomans, and benches. Wooden furniture can be stained to logically fit into various design styles.

Construction and Finishing

This wood product is used as both a structural and finishing material. The boards are used to create decking, flooring (parquet, strip flooring, and tongue-and-groove boards), wall panels, non-load-bearing walls, and interior stairs.

Production of Doors and Windows

Thanks to its stability and ease of processing, edged lumber is used in the manufacture of interior doors, window frames, casings, and sills.

Craft and Design Projects

For workshops that create unique items, edged boards offer wide possibilities. Woodworkers produce custom-made exclusive furniture, interior panels, room dividers and screens, and a variety of interior decor.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

What species of edged boards are available for order?

We have boards from over 10 species available for order. Hardwoods: European Oak, Red Oak, Ash, Alder, European Walnut, Black Locust, Beech, Hornbeam, Elm, Maple, Cherry. Softwoods: Pine, Spruce.

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order for lumber is 1 container.

What are the delivery times?

Delivery times for lumber depend on shipment volume and destination. Estimated delivery is 4-8 weeks.

How is the lumber packaged for transportation?

The edged boards are hermetically sealed in plastic film for safe sea transport.

What is an edged board and how does it differ from an unedged one?

On an edged board, the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. An unedged board, in contrast, retains its natural edge.

What moisture content is considered optimal for a joinery board?

For woodworking, particularly furniture production, the moisture content of the boards should be within the range of 8–12%.

What sizes of edged boards are available in stock?

We have lumber with the following parameters in stock:

  • thickness: 30 mm, 50 mm / 1.18″, 1.97″;
  • width: from 20 cm / from 7.87″;
  • length: 2.2-4.5 m / 86.61″-177.2″.

How should I properly store edged lumber?

Lumber should be stored in a dry, ventilated room with a stable temperature and humidity level.

Can edged lumber be used for exterior work?

Yes, hardwoods are used for exterior projects. The wood must be treated with antiseptics and special protective coatings.

What are the grades of edged lumber?

Edged lumber is classified into three main grades:

  • Grade 1. Practically free of knots, with a uniform texture and color.
  • Grade 2. Allows for knots up to 5 mm in diameter, minor surface cracks, and color variations.
  • Grade 3. A large number of knots, surface and through-cracks, and uneven coloring.

What is kiln drying and why is it important?

Kiln drying of wood is a controlled process during which the material is dried to an optimal moisture content (8-12%) in special chambers. This drying method ensures board stability and durability.
