Red Oak Wood: Main Characteristics

Northern, Canadian, or red oak (Quercus rubra) is a hardwood species known for its distinct grain pattern. Strong and durable, this wood is one of the most popular materials for furniture and interior finishing in the US market.

Technical Characteristics of Red Oak Lumber

  • The average density of dry oak lumber is approximately 700-750 kg/m³. On the Janka scale, its hardness ranges from 1220 lbf, and on the Brinell scale, it is 3.7-3.9.
  • Red oak wood has moderate viscosity and flexibility. Although this species is less pliable than white oak, it can still be bent after special treatment. The lumber can withstand significant impact loads.

Grain and Color of Red Oak Wood

  • The sapwood is light, almost white, while the heartwood color varies from pinkish-brown to reddish-brown. Thanks to its warm tones, this species is often used for classic interiors. When exposed to light, the wood takes on richer shades.
  • Red oak has a distinct texture, with a clear, coarse grain. The fibers are usually straight, but some logs may have wavy sections.

Processing Features

  • Red oak wood is easy to saw, mill, plane, and drill. Thanks to its dense structure, it holds fasteners well.
  • Red oak is easy to glue. To achieve the strongest possible bond, it’s recommended to use woodworking adhesives for hardwoods.
  • Oak lumber takes well to lacquers, oils, and stains. Craftsmen can easily accentuate the natural grain or give the material the desired shade.

Features of Grade 2 Red Oak Lumber

Grade 2 lumber is a strong and stable wood product that has some visual characteristics compared to higher grades.

Key features of Grade 2 lumber:

  • Dry, loose knots with a diameter of up to 5 mm are permitted. The number of knots per linear meter is not strictly regulated. However, they should not be located close to each other or to the edges of the board to avoid reducing the lumber’s strength.
  • Surface cracks up to 100 mm (3.94″) long are allowed, as long as they do not affect the board’s structural integrity.
  • Noticeable color differences between different sections are permitted.

What is Red Oak Lumber?

Lumber is a wood product with the bark and wane trimmed from its edges. High-quality logs are selected to make lumber. The raw material is sawed into boards, taking into account the direction of the fibers and the required thickness and length. The blanks then pass through machines that remove any remaining bark and create straight edges. The wood’s moisture content is brought to an optimal 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry boards are then sorted by grade, with color, grain structure, and the number and type of knots being evaluated.

How Kiln Drying Works

Our stock program includes kiln-dried lumber. Kiln drying is a high-tech and controlled process. Unlike natural drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees stable and uniformly dried material with an optimal woodworking moisture content of 8-12%.

The main stages of wood drying in special kilns are:

  1. Loading the lumber. The boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). At the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is primarily used for hardwoods, such as oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and evens out the moisture content, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity inside the kiln are computer-controlled and change according to a set program, depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Control. Moisture meters and sensors constantly monitor the condition of the wood. Drying continues until the material reaches an optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final conditioning and cooling. To relieve internal stresses, the dried lumber is treated with steam. The boards are then gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient temperature (approximately 35–45 °C) to prevent condensation.

Kiln-dried lumber is optimally suited for manufacturing furniture, doors, and other interior elements. Wood with a woodworking moisture content is stable, durable, and ready for further processing.

Quality control is carried out in three stages:

Raw material selection and inspection. We assess the quality of the wood, its grade, grain structure, and compliance with technical requirements.

First production batch inspection. Once production begins, we inspect the first units to ensure proper process execution and consistent parameters.

Final inspection during packaging. Before shipment, we check moisture content, dimensions, surface finish quality, and overall compliance with the approved specification.

This approach ensures consistent quality for every batch and full transparency throughout the entire production process.

Packaging and Transportation

Truck and rail transport

Packaging. Products are palletized on kiln-dried lumber pallets to ensure stability, ventilation, and preservation of the geometry and quality of wood materials.

Protective wrapping. Materials are sealed off from the external environment. Pallets are wrapped in multi-layer moisture-resistant shrink film. The film is tightly secured around the cargo, creating an airtight barrier and additional cushioning during truck and rail transport.

Board sheathing. The top and sides of the cargo are additionally protected with MDF, fiberboard, or plywood sheets. This sheathing stabilizes the batch and prevents crushing, scratching, and warping during loading and unloading.

Strapping. Pallets are secured with strapping bands to prevent product shifting during transit.

Ocean freight (container shipping)

Reinforced packaging. In compliance with international standards, we use heat-protected and moisture-resistant packaging with reinforced fasteners for ocean container shipments.

In-container securing. Specialized fasteners, strapping, and dunnage bags are used to prevent cargo movement caused by vessel rolling.

Additional product protection. When necessary, desiccants, interleaving pads, and multi-layer films are applied.
