Characteristics of Grade 3 (B/C) Hornbeam Furniture Panels

In the context of finger-jointed hornbeam furniture panels, Grade 3 is determined by the visual characteristics of the surfaces, not by strength parameters. All panels are manufactured using the same technology and have high strength. Grade 3 (B/C) furniture panels are the lowest in terms of appearance quality. The material has the maximum allowable number of natural wood defects. This product is cost-effective but requires additional finishing.

Features of Grade 3 furniture panels are as follows:

  • Presence of significant knots, including sound and black knots. Large knots may be filled with wood putty.
  • Sapwood is permitted, sometimes up to 75% of a lamella. Sapwood has a lighter shade compared to heartwood and can create significant contrast.
  • Lamellas are not matched for pattern, tone, or texture. The panel can be very inconsistent in color, with pronounced transitions between lamellas.
  • Minor chips on the surface or edges, non-penetrating cracks (especially near knots), and mechanical damage are permitted.
  • Bark and rot are not permitted.

Manufacturing Technology of Finger-Jointed Hornbeam Furniture Panels

  • Wood Drying. The lamellas are made from kiln-dried boards with a moisture content of 8-10%, which ensures the material’s stability.
  • Cutting Lamellas. The wood is sawn into strips of a specific thickness and width. Modern machinery guarantees precise dimensions for each segment.
  • Sorting. The finished lamellas are sorted by quality and size; strips with defects are removed.
  • Milling the Micro-Finger Joint. A special interlocking joint—the micro-finger joint—is formed on the ends of the lamellas to maximize the gluing surface area.
  • Joining Segments. The lamellas are glued together lengthwise and widthwise under a press using environmentally friendly adhesives that meet strength and safety standards.
  • Calibration and Sanding. The finished panel is calibrated to the required dimensions and sanded to prepare the surface for further finishing.

Advantages of Hornbeam Furniture Panels Over Solid Wood

  1. Stability. The wooden lamellas are made from boards dried to an optimal moisture level (8-10%). Kiln drying the wood eliminates internal stresses, which cause warping in solid wood. Thus, the finger-jointed panel is not prone to warping or cracking due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
  2. Structural Homogeneity. The finger-jointing process allows to create a uniform surface free of defects.
  3. Wear Resistance. The load is distributed evenly across the material’s surface. The structure, composed of multi-directional segments, dissipates point stresses and prevents pressure concentration in one spot. As a result, the panel maintains its integrity even under significant loads.
  4. Optimal Use of Raw Materials. The finger-jointing technology allows for the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste and making production more effective and environmentally friendly.
  5. Aesthetics. The wooden lamellas that make up the panel retain the wood’s natural texture. The finger-jointing process creates a parquet-like pattern that can be an interesting design element.

Applications of Hornbeam Furniture Panels

This strong and stable material is used to create products such as:

  • countertops for desks, kitchen workspaces, and bar counters;
  • treads for interior stairs;
  • furniture fronts: doors for cabinets, dressers, nightstands, and tall cabinets;
  • headboards for beds;
  • seats for bar stools, benches, and stools;
  • windowsills in homes and offices;
  • decorative wall panels.

Hornbeam Wood: Features

Hornbeam (Carpinus betulus) is an accessible industrial species. The wood has a light gray or whitish-yellow color that hardly changes over time. Hornbeam’s texture is very fine, uniform, and dense, with barely noticeable annual rings. With a density of 750-800 kg/m³ and a Brinell hardness of 3.7, the solid wood demonstrates significant resistance to abrasion, impact loads, and deformation. The wood becomes stronger after drying. Hornbeam is not always easy to cut by hand, but the species machines, sands, and polishes wonderfully. Hornbeam is chosen for manufacturing parquet flooring, furniture, and components in mechanical engineering.
