Characteristics of Grade A/B Oak Edge-Glued Panels

For finger-jointed oak panels, Grade 1 is defined by the visual characteristics of the surfaces, not by strength parameters. All panels are manufactured using the same technology and have high strength.

So, what is the appearance of Grade A/B finger-jointed panels?

  • The face and back sides are clean, free of visible wood defects, scratches, dents, cracks, chips, or tool marks.
  • Sound knots (1-2 per panel) are allowed. Loose or black knots are not permitted.
  • Uniformity of color and texture. Lamellas are meticulously matched for color and grain. There are no abrupt tonal shifts between adjacent segments.
  • No sapwood (the lighter, less dense part of the wood next to the bark).
  • Glue lines are inconspicuous. There is no glue residue, gaps, or delamination on the surface.

Production Technology of Finger-Jointed Oak Panels

  • Wood Drying. The lamellas are produced from kiln-dried lumber with a moisture content of 8-10%, which guarantees the material’s stability.
  • Cutting Lamellas. The wood is cut into strips of a specific thickness and width. Modern equipment guarantees the precise dimensions of each segment.
  • Sorting. The finished lamellas are sorted by quality and size, and any strips with defects are removed.
  • Milling the Micro-Finger Joint. A special toothed connection—the micro-finger joint—is formed on the ends of the lamellas to ensure maximum glue surface area.
  • Joining the Segments. The lamellas are glued together lengthwise and widthwise under a press, using eco-friendly adhesives that meet strength and safety standards.
  • Calibration and Sanding. The finished panel is calibrated to achieve the desired dimensions and then sanded to prepare the surface for further finishing.

Advantages of Oak Edge-Glued Panels Over Solid Wood

  • Stability. The wooden lamellas are made from boards dried to an optimal moisture level (8-10%). Kiln drying eliminates the internal stresses that cause solid wood to deform. Therefore, the finger-jointed panel is not prone to warping or cracking from changes in humidity and temperature.
  • Structural Uniformity. The finger-jointing process allows for the creation of a uniform, defect-free surface.
  • Wear Resistance. Loads are distributed evenly across the material’s surface. The structure, composed of segments with varied grain direction, “dissipates” point stresses and prevents pressure from concentrating in a single area. As a result, the panel maintains its integrity even under heavy loads.
  • Optimal Use of Raw Materials. Finger-jointing technology enables the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste and making the production process more effective and eco-friendly.
  • Aesthetics. The wooden lamellas that form the panel retain the natural wood texture. The finger-jointing process creates a parquet-style pattern that can serve as an attractive design element.

Applications of Oak Edge-Glued Panels

This strong and stable material is used for creating items such as:

  • countertops for desks, kitchen workspaces, and bar tops;
  • treads for interior stairs;
  • furniture fronts: doors for cabinets, dressers, side tables, and tall storage units;
  • bed headboards;
  • seats for bar stools and benches;
  • windowsills in homes and offices;
  • decorative wall panels.

Red Oak Wood: Key Parameters

Red oak (Quercus rubra) is one of the most popular hardwood species in North America. The heartwood has a characteristic pinkish-red or light brown hue. The texture is coarse, with pronounced straight grains and prominent annual rings. With its high density (680-720 kg/m³) and hardness (3.7 on the Brinell scale), the wood is suitable for making furniture, flooring, and interior elements. An important distinction from European oak is its open pores, which make the wood less resistant to moisture but allow for easy impregnation with protective finishes. Red oak is valued for its strength, durability, and ease of machining, making it a versatile option for various projects.
