Advantages of Alder Sawn Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber obtained by sawing a solid log on specialized equipment. A lamella’s thickness is typically from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078-0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the wood’s natural grain, color, and texture.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Thanks to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer retains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendly. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to use industrial wood.
  4. Wide Range of Applications. Sawn veneer is used to create various woodworking products, from furniture fronts and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. Lamellas maintain a stable shape and are suitable for use in residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Ease of Processing. Sawn veneer is easy to process. Sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and lacquered.

Alder Sawn Veneer, Grade Rustic

“Rustic” grade sawn veneer has the most natural features. The cost of this material is significantly lower than grades A and B.

Characteristics of “rustic” grade sawn veneer:

  • Various types of knots are allowed: live, loose, black, and with cracks.
  • Minor cracks and resin pockets are possible on the surface.
  • Noticeable color variations are present.
  • Despite its visual imperfections, the material remains strong.

This decorative material, with its pronounced wood features, is chosen for projects in the rustic, loft, chalet, eco, scandi, and country styles.

Alder Sawn Lamella Manufacturing Process

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Boards of the highest or first grade are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10%. Drying in compliance with the technology relieves internal wood tension and prevents the lumber from deforming.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next stage is board calibration. The material is adjusted to the size of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting accuracy, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with size and quality standards. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked into packs.

Sawn veneer is a premium facing material, the production of which is focused on quality and preserving the properties of the wood.

Uses of Alder Sawn Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Countertops. Lamella is used to finish countertops for desks and dining tables, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and store counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella facing gives furniture a solid look. It is an optimal choice for cabinets, dressers, and sideboards. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and is easy to stain and lacquer.
  • Stair Treads for Indoor Stairs. Thanks to its high strength and durability, sawn veneer is a popular material for finishing stairs. A thickness of 2-10 mm is sufficient to withstand the operational load in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Sawn veneer-faced interior doors are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-structural constructions help to zone spaces and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wood lamellas are used to create wall panels with a unique grain pattern. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different types of textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to make various small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the foundation for various woodworking products. High-quality facing material makes it possible to bring the most complex design ideas to life. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed, but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Alder Wood: Key Features

Alder (Alnus) is a deciduous species common in Europe, North Africa, and West Asia. The accessible and easy-to-work-with wood is used to manufacture furniture, veneer, and decorative items.

Technical Specifications

  • The average density of alder solid wood is 420 kg/m³. These indicators show that the wood is one of the lightest deciduous species.
  • Janka hardness: 650 lbf; Brinell hardness: 2.7-3.
  • Alder has moderate viscosity and elasticity.

Texture, Grain, Color

  • The grain is usually straight and uniform, with a fine texture. Annual rings are weakly expressed, which gives the wood a uniform appearance.
  • The sapwood does not differ in color from the heartwood. Freshly cut wood has a light yellow or golden-pink color. When exposed to air, it acquires a reddish or pink-brown tint.
  • Alder has fine, almost invisible pores, which allows for a perfectly smooth surface without additional pore-filling treatment.

Processing Features

  • This soft species is easily processed with hand and machine tools. Alder can be sawed, planed, sanded, turned, and drilled without any issues.
  • Thanks to its uniform texture, alder is a popular base for imitating more expensive species, such as walnut or cherry. The solid wood takes well to lacquers, oils, and other coatings.
