Advantages of Sawn Beech Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber obtained by sawing solid wood on specialized equipment. The thickness of a lamella is usually between 2 and 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the grain, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Thanks to its thickness, the lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishes.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer preserves the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendly. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. This lumber is an efficient way to use commercial timber.
  4. Wide Range of Applications. Sawn veneer is used to create various millwork products, from furniture fronts and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape and are suitable for use in residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Rustic Grade Sawn Beech Veneer

Rustic grade sawn veneer has the most natural characteristics. Its cost is significantly lower than A and B grades.

Characteristics of rustic grade sawn veneer:

  • Various types of knots are allowed: live, loose, black, and with cracks.
  • Slight cracks and resin pockets may be present on the surface.
  • Noticeable color variations are common.
  • Despite these visual imperfections, the material remains strong.

This type of veneer, with its prominent wood characteristics, is chosen for projects in rustic, loft, chalet, eco, Scandinavian, and country styles.

Beech Sawn Lamella Production Technology

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The lumber is made in the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Grade A or 1 boards are selected for producing the lamella.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying allows for solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8–10%. Drying with this technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next step is to calibrate the boards. The material is adjusted to fit the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the required thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with size and quality standards. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked in bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium facing material whose production focuses on quality and preserving the properties of the wood.

Uses for Sawn Beech Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Parquet Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of parquet flooring. The wood sheets make multilayer floor coverings more aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamellas are used for finishing the tops of writing and dining tables, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and store counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella facing gives furniture a solid look. It is an ideal choice for cabinets, dressers, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and moisture fluctuations and is easily stained and varnished.
  • Interior Stair Treads. Due to its high strength and durability, sawn veneer is a popular material for finishing staircases. A thickness of 2–10 mm is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial premises. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. These non-load-bearing structures help zone space and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wood lamellas are used to create wall panels with a unique grain pattern. The veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to create a uniform surface or a highly decorative canvas with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Artisans use sawn veneer to make a variety of small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, etc.

Wood lamella is the basis for various millwork products. High-quality facing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Beech Wood: Key Characteristics

Beech (Fagus sylvatica) is one of the most common hardwoods in Europe, used in furniture production, flooring, and more. The wood’s value lies in its density, uniform structure, and light color. Beech is widespread in most of Central and Western Europe, from France to Ukraine and Northern Italy. The tree is also found in Southern Scandinavia.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry beech wood is about 680 kg/m³ (42 lbs/ft³).
  • Its hardness ratings—1450 lbf on the Janka scale and 3.8 on the Brinell scale—indicate resistance to wear and impact.
  • Beech has high toughness and flexibility, meaning the wood is resistant to splitting. The wood is used for bent furniture elements, such as chair backs.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • Beech fibers are usually straight, and the grain is uniform and fine. This allows for products with a smooth surface.
  • The color of the sapwood and heartwood is almost identical. The palette consists of light shades: cream, creamy pink, and light brown. Over time, beech may become more saturated due to sunlight exposure.
  • Knots are usually small and barely noticeable.

Processing Features

  • After kiln drying, the wood becomes stable.
  • Due to its hardness and density, beech requires the use of sharp and durable tools. The wood can be sanded, routed, glued, and polished.
  • Beech is one of the best species for bending. After steam treatment, the wood becomes flexible, and after drying, it holds its shape well.
  • Thanks to its light color and uniform texture, beech takes stains easily. The species also responds well to painting and varnishing.
