Benefits of Sawn Walnut Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is a lumber product obtained by sawing solid wood on specialized equipment. The lamella is typically between 2 to 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″ thick. Sawn veneer retains the wood’s pattern, color, and texture.

The material’s benefits include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Thanks to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Beauty. Sawn veneer maintains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendly. These thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Sawn lumber is an efficient way to use industrial wood.
  4. Wide Application. Sawn veneer is used to create various millwork products, from furniture fronts and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas maintain a stable shape, making them suitable for use in residential and public spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, stained, and lacquered.

Grade A Sawn Walnut Veneer

Classification by grade allows for an assessment of the quality and appearance of the lumber. Grade A is the highest quality category.

Characteristics of Grade A sawn veneer:

  • Allows for 2-3 healthy white knots up to 1 cm / 0.39″ in diameter per linear meter / 39.37″.
  • Uniform texture with straight grain.
  • Minor natural color variations are possible.

This veneer is ideal for creating premium products where a flawless appearance is essential.

European Walnut Sawn Lamella Manufacturing Process

Sawn veneer production is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of this lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Grade A or Grade 1 boards are chosen for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10%. Drying with proper technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Stock Preparation. The next stage is board preparation. The material is dimensioned to fit the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the desired thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with size and quality standards. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked in bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium surfacing material, the production of which is focused on quality and the preservation of the wood’s properties.

Uses for Sawn Walnut Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Parquet Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered flooring. The wood sheets make the multi-layered flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used for finishing the surfaces of desks, dining tables, bar counters, kitchen countertops, and retail displays.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella facing gives furniture a solid look. It is an ideal choice for cabinets, dressers, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and is easily stained and lacquered.
  • Interior Stair Treads. Due to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for facing stairs. A thickness of 2-10 mm is sufficient to withstand the operational load in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-structural dividers help to zone a space and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wood lamellas are used to create unique wall panels. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Artisans craft a variety of small household items from sawn veneer: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, eyeglass stands, clocks, etc.

Wood lamella is the foundation for various millwork products. This high-quality surfacing material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed, but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

European Walnut Wood: Key Parameters

European walnut (Juglans regia), also known as common walnut, is one of the most valuable hardwood species. The wood is distinguished by its color palette, distinct grain pattern, and ease of processing. The native range of European walnut includes the Balkan Peninsula, the Carpathian Mountains, and western and central Asia. The species is now cultivated throughout Europe.

Technical Specifications

  • The average density of dry walnut is within 600–650 kg/m³.
  • Its Janka hardness is 1,220 lbf, and its Brinell hardness is 3.4.
  • Walnut has good toughness and elasticity. The wood is quite resistant to impact and is not prone to splitting.

Texture, Pattern, Color

  • The grain of European walnut is usually straight but can be wavy or twisted, especially near the base of the trunk or knots.
  • The thin sapwood is light gray, cream, or yellowish-gray. The heartwood’s palette ranges from light brown to dark chocolate. Reddish-brown and purple streaks are also common.
  • Walnut has small, not very prominent pores. After sanding, the walnut wood has a smooth surface.

Processing Characteristics

  • Walnut is easily processed with hand and machine tools. The wood is easy to cut, sand, turn, and carve.
  • The dense wood absorbs oils and stains and accepts waxes and lacquers. The finishing coat not only protects the natural material but also highlights the wood’s unique grain pattern.
  • Thanks to its decorative qualities and strength, walnut is an optimal material for furniture, flooring, stairs, musical instruments, veneer, and various decorative products.
