Advantages of Sawn Walnut Veneer

Sawn veneer, also known as lamella, is lumber produced by sawing a solid wood block on specialized equipment. The thickness of a lamella typically ranges from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078-0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the grain, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Durability and Longevity. Thanks to its significant thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer preserves the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-friendliness. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Sawn lumber is an efficient way to use industrial wood.
  4. Versatile Applications. Sawn veneer is used to create a wide range of millwork: from furniture fronts and engineered wood flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. Lamellas maintain a stable shape and are suitable for use in residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Ease of Processing. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Grade B Sawn Walnut Veneer

Grade B sawn veneer is priced lower than Grade A but retains all the main advantages of sawn veneer.

Characteristics of Grade B lamella:

  • Black knots up to 5 mm / 0.2″ in diameter are allowed on the surface. The number of knots is not strictly regulated, but there is a requirement for their placement. Knots should not be too close to each other or to the edges to avoid reducing the strength of the lamella.
  • Color changes and noticeable tone variations are possible.
  • Natural texture variations.

This material is used for projects where aesthetic requirements are not strict, or for products where natural features are part of the design.

European Walnut Sawn Lamella Production Technology

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The process consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Only Grade A or Grade 1 boards are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10%. Drying according to this technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Blank Calibration. The next step is to calibrate the boards. The material is adjusted to fit the dimensions of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting accuracy, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for compliance with size and quality standards. After being sorted by grade, the lamellas are stacked into packs.

Sawn veneer is a premium surfacing material, and its production is focused on quality and preserving the properties of the wood.

Applications of Sawn Walnut Lamella

Sawn veneer is a durable, long-lasting, and easy-to-work-with type of lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Engineered Wood Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered wood flooring. The wood sheets make the multi-layered flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used to finish the tops of desks, dining tables, bar counters, kitchen work surfaces, and retail counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella veneer gives furniture a solid, substantial appearance. It is an ideal choice for cabinets, dressers, tall storage units, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and is easily stained and varnished.
  • Interior Stair Treads. Thanks to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for facing stairs. A thickness of 2-10 mm is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. These non-load-bearing structures help to zone a space and often play a vital role in the interior design of studios, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wood lamellas are used to create unique wall panels. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to make various small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, eyeglass stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the foundation for a wide range of millwork. High-quality surfacing material makes it possible to bring the most complex design ideas to life. Sawn veneer is used wherever the beauty of wood is required, along with durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

European Walnut Wood: Key Parameters

European Walnut (Juglans regia), also known as common walnut, is one of the most valuable hardwood species. The wood stands out for its color palette, clear grain pattern, and ease of processing. The natural range of European walnut includes the Balkan Peninsula, the Carpathian Mountains, and West and Central Asia. The species is now cultivated throughout Europe.

Technical Specifications

  • The average density of dry walnut is within 600-650 kg/m³.
  • The Janka hardness is 1,220 lbf, and the Brinell hardness is 3.4.
  • Walnut has good viscosity and elasticity ratings. The wood is quite impact-resistant and not prone to splitting.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • European walnut fibers are usually straight but can be wavy or twisted, especially near the base of the trunk or at knots.
  • The thin sapwood is light gray, cream, or yellowish-gray. The heartwood color varies from light brown to dark chocolate. Reddish-brown and purple veins are often present.
  • Walnut has small, not very prominent pores. After sanding, the walnut surface is smooth.

Processing Characteristics

  • Walnut is easy to process with hand and machine tools. The wood is easily cut, sanded, and turned, and is suitable for carving.
  • The hard wood absorbs oils and stains and accepts waxes and varnishes. Finishing not only protects the natural material but also enhances the wood’s unique grain pattern.
  • Thanks to its decorative qualities and durability, walnut is an optimal material for furniture, flooring, stairs, musical instruments, veneer, and various decorative items.
