Alder (Alnus) is a hardwood species valued for its ease of processing, uniform structure, and availability.

Technical Parameters of Alder

  • The average density of solid alder wood in a dry state is approximately 420-450 kg/m³. On the Janka scale, its hardness ranges from 590-600 lbf, and on the Brinell scale, it is 2.7.
  • This soft wood has moderate toughness and flexibility. The solid wood is easy to work with and bend.

Color Palette and Texture of Alder

  • Immediately after sawing, the wood has a light yellow or light pink hue, which develops into richer reddish-brown tones upon exposure to air. The sapwood and heartwood are practically indistinguishable in color.
  • Alder has a fine, even, and uniform texture. Annual growth rings are nearly invisible. The grain is usually straight, without pronounced irregularities.

Workability

  • Alder is easy to cut, mill, sand, glue, and polish. The species does not split or crack when drilled, allowing for high-precision work.
  • Thanks to its uniform structure, the wood accepts lacquers, oils, and stains excellently. Alder is used to imitate more expensive woods (such as cherry or walnut), enabling manufacturers to create aesthetically pleasing yet more affordable products.

Features of Grade 3 (Rustic) Edged Alder Boards

Grade 3 edged boards are the most affordable option, used for technical applications or projects with a rustic aesthetic.

Key characteristics of Grade 3 edged boards:

  • A higher number of knots compared to higher-grade lumber. Various types of knots are permitted: sound, intergrown, loose, and black. The size and location do not matter.
  • Surface and through cracks up to 1.5-2 mm wide and up to ⅓ of the board’s length are allowed.
  • Any color variations, including dark spots, are present.
  • Wormholes, resin pockets, and mechanical damage that do not affect structural integrity may be present.

What is Edged Alder Lumber?

An edged board is a piece of lumber from which the bark and wane on the side edges have been removed. High-quality logs are selected to produce edged boards. The raw material is sawn into boards, considering the grain direction and the required thickness and length. The blanks then pass through machines where the remaining bark is removed and straight edges are formed. The wood’s moisture content is brought to an optimal 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry joinery boards are then sorted by grade, assessing color, grain structure, and the number and type of knots, among other factors.

How Does Kiln-Drying for Boards Work?

Our stock program features kiln-dried edged boards. Kiln-drying of wood is a high-tech and controlled process. Unlike air-drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees a stable and uniformly dried material with an optimal joinery moisture content of 8-12%.

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns:

  1. Loading the Lumber. Boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly used for hardwoods, like oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and equalizes moisture, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity of the air inside the kiln are controlled by a computer and changed according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly monitor the wood’s condition. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, dry wood is treated with steam. Then the boards are gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient environment (approximately 35–45 °C) to avoid condensation.

Kiln-dried edged boards are ideal for making furniture, doors and other interior elements. Wood with joinery moisture content is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.
