Characteristics of Grade B (2nd Grade) Cherry Wood Panels

For finger-jointed cherry wood panels, Grade B is determined by the visual characteristics of the surfaces, not by strength parameters. All panels are manufactured using the same technology and possess high strength.

A Grade B (2nd Grade) wood panel has certain characteristics related to the presence of natural wood defects. On the panel’s surface:

  • Black knots up to 5 mm are allowed.
  • Variations in the color of the lamellas are possible, and there may not be a perfect match in grain pattern and tone.
  • Minor bonding defects that do not affect the material’s performance characteristics are allowed.
  • Sapwood may be present (up to 20%).

Manufacturing Process for Finger-Jointed Cherry Wood Panels

  • Wood Drying. The lamellas are made from kiln-dried boards with a moisture content of 8-10%, which ensures the material’s stability.
  • Cutting the Lamellas. The wood is sawn into strips of a specific thickness and width. Modern machinery guarantees precise dimensions for each segment.
  • Sorting. The finished lamellas are sorted by quality and size, and strips with defects are removed.
  • Milling the Micro Finger Joint. A special toothed joint—the micro finger joint—is formed on the ends of the lamellas to ensure the maximum bonding surface area.
  • Joining the Segments. The lamellas are bonded together lengthwise and widthwise under a press using environmentally friendly adhesives that meet strength and safety standards.
  • Calibrating and Sanding. The finished panel is calibrated to the required dimensions and sanded to prepare the surface for further finishing.

Advantages of Cherry Wood Panels Over Solid Lumber

  1. Stability. The wooden lamellas are made from boards dried to an optimal moisture level (8-10%). Kiln-drying the wood eliminates the internal stresses that cause warping in solid lumber. Thus, the finger-jointed panel is not prone to warping or cracking due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
  2. Structural Uniformity. The finger-jointing process allows to create a uniform, defect-free surface.
  3. Wear Resistance. Loads are distributed evenly across the material’s surface. The structure, composed of segments with varied grain direction, dissipates point stresses and prevents pressure from concentrating in a single spot. As a result, the panel maintains its integrity even under significant loads.
  4. Optimal Use of Raw Materials. The finger-jointing technology allows for the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste and making production more effective and environmentally friendly.
  5. Aesthetics. The wooden lamellas that make up the panel retain the wood’s natural texture. The finger-jointing process creates a parquet-like pattern that can be an interesting design element.

Applications for Cherry Wood Panels

This strong and stable material is used to create products such as:

  • countertops for desks, kitchen workspaces, and bar tops;
  • treads for interior stairs;
  • furniture fronts: doors for cabinets, dressers, stands, and pantry cabinets;
  • bed headboards;
  • seats for bar stools, benches, and stools;
  • windowsills in homes and offices;
  • decorative wall panels.

Cherry Wood: Key Characteristics

Cherry (Prunus avium) is a hardwood species. The heartwood has a distinctive golden-red, pinkish-brown, or pale pink hue that darkens over time.

Cherry’s texture is uniform, with straight or occasionally wavy grain. With a density of approximately 580-600 kg/m³, the wood is relatively lightweight.

Its Brinell hardness is 3.5. Cherry is easy to work, sands smoothly, and can be polished to a high shine. The solid wood bends well and is excellent for gluing.

These characteristics make cherry wood an optimal material for manufacturing high-end furniture, musical instruments, interior decor, and veneer.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
