Characteristics of Grade 3 (B/C) Walnut Edge-Glued Panels

In the context of finger-jointed walnut edge-glued panels, Grade 3 is determined by the visual characteristics of the surfaces, not by strength parameters. All panels are manufactured using the same technology and possess high strength.

The Grade 3 (B/C) edge-glued panel is the lowest in terms of visual appearance quality. The material has the maximum allowable quantity of natural wood defects. The product is cost-effective but requires additional finishing.

Features of Grade 3 edge-glued panels are as follows:

  • Presence of significant-sized knots, including both sound and black knots. Large knots may be filled with wood putty.
  • Sapwood is permissible, sometimes up to 75% on a lamella. Sapwood has a lighter shade compared to the heartwood and can create a significant contrast.
  • No matching of lamellas by pattern, tone, or texture. The panel can be very heterogeneous in color, with pronounced transitions between lamellas.
  • Minor chips on the surface or edges, non-through cracks (especially near knots), and mechanical damage are allowed.
  • Bark and rot are not permitted.

Production Technology of Finger-Jointed Walnut Edge-Glued Panels

  • Wood Drying. The lamellas are made from kiln-dried boards with a moisture content of 8-10%, which ensures the material’s stability.
  • Ripping Lamellas. The wood is sawn into strips of a specific thickness and width. Modern machines guarantee precise dimensions for each segment.
  • Sorting. The finished lamellas are sorted by quality and size; strips with defects are removed.
  • Milling Micro-Finger Joints. A special serrated connection—the micro-finger joint—is formed on the ends of the lamellas to ensure the maximum gluing surface area.
  • Joining Segments. The lamellas are glued together lengthwise and widthwise under a press using environmentally friendly adhesives that meet strength and safety standards.
  • Calibrating and Sanding. The finished panel is calibrated to achieve the required dimensions and sanded to prepare the surface for further finishing.

Advantages of Walnut Edge-Glued Panels Over Solid Wood

  1. Stability. The wooden lamellas are made from boards dried to an optimal moisture level (8-10%). Kiln drying the wood eliminates internal stresses, which are the cause of deformation in solid wood. Thus, the finger-jointed panel is not prone to warping or cracking due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
  2. Structural Uniformity. The finger-jointing process allows for a uniform, defect-free surface.
  3. Wear Resistance. The load is evenly distributed across the material’s surface. The structure of multi-directional segments “dissipates” point stresses and prevents pressure from concentrating in one place. As a result, the panel maintains its integrity even under significant loads.
  4. Optimal Use of Raw Materials. The finger-jointing technology allows for the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste and making production more effective and environmentally friendly.
  5. Aesthetics. The wooden lamellas that make up the panel retain the texture of the wood. The finger-jointing process forms a parquet-like pattern that can become an interesting design element.

Applications of Walnut Edge-Glued Panels

This durable and stable material is used to create products such as:

  • countertops for desks, kitchen work areas, and bar counters;
  • treads for interior stairs;
  • furniture fronts: doors for cabinets, dressers, nightstands, and tall storage units;
  • bed headboards;
  • seats for bar stools, benches, and stools;
  • windowsills in homes and offices;
  • decorative wall panels.

European (Common) Walnut Wood: Key Parameters

European walnut (Juglans regia), also known as common walnut, is one of the most valuable hardwood species. The color palette of the heartwood consists of a wide spectrum of shades: from light brown with a reddish tint to a rich dark brown, often with gray or purple streaks. The wood’s texture is uniform. The distinct and complex grain pattern is formed by straight or wavy fibers.

Thanks to its density (about 640-670 kg/m³) and hardness (5 on the Brinell scale), the solid wood is wear-resistant. Walnut has excellent toughness. The wood is easy to work with and is excellent for sanding and lacquering. Walnut is used for manufacturing exclusive furniture and interior finishing.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)

How do we guarantee product quality?

We manufacture our edge-glued panels in strict compliance with technology. When an order is placed, we sign a contract specifying quality standards.

Why should you order edge-glued panels from us?
