Maple Wood: Characteristics

Maple (Acer) is a classic choice for furniture and finishing material manufacturers in the U.S. market. Thanks to its strength and durability, this light-colored wood is an optimal material for creating both functional and decorative products.

1 66

Technical Properties of Maple

  • The density of dry solid wood is 650-710 kg/m³, meaning the material is quite heavy and resistant to mechanical damage. On the Janka hardness scale, maple’s rating is 1450 lbf. According to the Brinell classification, its hardness is between 4.1 and 4.7. These parameters indicate its resistance to denting. Solid maple is suitable for flooring and other products subject to intensive use.
  • Maple has moderate viscosity and resists splitting well. It can be bent after steam treatment.

Aesthetic Parameters of Maple Wood

  • The sapwood and heartwood have similar shades, ranging from creamy white to light yellow. Over time, the wood can acquire a golden hue under the influence of light.
  • Maple has a uniform and fine grain. The fibers are straight, but sometimes unique patterns like “bird’s eye,” “wavy/curly,” or “tiger maple” are found. This figured grain adds special aesthetic value to the material. The wood typically has a minimal number of knots. A delicate natural luster is visible on the surface of the solid wood.

Processing Features

  • The wood is easy to cut, plane, sand, and rout. The material glues exceptionally well, ensuring strong and reliable joints.
  • Maple readily absorbs varnishes and clear oils. This allows for preserving the light shade of the solid wood and emphasizing its unique texture.

Features of Grade 2 Edged Maple Lumber

Grade 2 edged lumber is a strong and stable product that has visual characteristics different from higher grades.

Key characteristics of Grade 2 edged boards:

  • Dry, loose knots up to 5 mm in diameter are permitted. The number of knots per linear meter is not strictly regulated. However, they should not be located close to each other or to the edges of the board, so as not to reduce the strength of the lumber.
  • Surface checks up to 100 mm (3.94″) in length that do not affect the structural integrity of the board may be present.
  • Noticeable color variations between different areas are allowed.

What is Edged Maple Lumber?

An edged board is a piece of lumber from which the bark and wane have been removed from the side edges. High-quality logs are selected for the production of edged lumber. The raw material is sawn into boards, taking into account the direction of the fibers and the required thickness and length. Then, the blanks go through machines where the remaining bark is removed and straight edges are formed. The wood’s moisture content is brought to an optimal 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry furniture-grade boards are then sorted by grade, assessing color, grain structure, number and type of knots, and so on.

How Does Kiln Drying of Boards Work?

Our warehouse program features kiln-dried edged lumber. Kiln drying of wood is a high-tech and controlled process. Unlike air drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees a stable and uniformly dried material with an optimal furniture-grade moisture content of 8-12%.

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns:

  1. Loading the Lumber. The boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly used for hardwoods, such as oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and equalizes moisture, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity of the air inside the kiln are controlled by a computer and changed according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly monitor the condition of the wood. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, the dried lumber is treated with steam. Then the boards are gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient environment (approximately 35–45 °C) to avoid condensation.

Kiln-dried edged boards are ideally suited for the production of furniture, doors, and other interior elements. Wood with furniture-grade moisture content is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.

Advantages of Edged Maple Lumber

  1. Versatility of Application. The material is suitable for both mass production of furniture and individual craft projects.
  2. Stability. Thanks to kiln drying, uniformly dried and stable solid boards are obtained, ready for further mechanical processing.
  3. Waste Reduction and Economic Benefit. High-quality primary processing of the lumber reduces the amount of waste and increases the raw material utilization rate. This means you pay only for the usable volume of material, which is especially important in mass production.
  4. Optimization of Production Processes. Lumber with pre-processed side edges reduces cutting time and optimizes production processes. Edged boards are easy to plane, rout, sand, stain, varnish, and paint.
  5. Convenience of Logistics and Storage. Thanks to their regular shape, the boards are easy to stack, which saves warehouse space, simplifies transportation, and reduces logistics costs.

Uses of Edged Maple Lumber

Edged lumber is one of the most popular materials in the woodworking industry. Below are the areas where this natural material is actively used.

3 59

Furniture Manufacturing

Edged boards are used in the manufacture of carcasses and facades for cabinets, dressers, and nightstands, as well as tables, chairs, beds, ottomans, and benches. Wooden furniture can be stained to logically fit into design projects of various styles.

Construction and Finishing

This lumber product is used as both a structural and finishing material. Boards are used to create decking, flooring (parquet, parquet boards, and tongue-and-groove boards), wall panels, non-load-bearing walls, and interior stairs.

Production of Doors and Windows

Thanks to its stability and ease of processing, edged lumber is used in the manufacture of interior doors, window frames, casings, and sills.

Craft and Design Projects

For workshops that create unique products, edged boards open up wide possibilities. Woodworkers produce custom-made exclusive furniture, interior panels, room dividers and screens, and a variety of interior decor.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

Edged boards of which species are available for order?

You can order boards from over 10 species. Hardwoods: European Oak, Red Oak, Ash, Alder, European Walnut, Black Locust, Beech, Hornbeam, Elm, Maple, Cherry. Softwoods: Pine, Spruce.

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order volume for boards is 1 container.

What are the delivery times?

The delivery time for lumber depends on the supply volume and destination. Estimated delivery time is 4-8 weeks.

How are the boards packaged for transport?

The edged boards are hermetically sealed in film for safe sea transport.

What is an edged board and how does it differ from an unedged one?

The bark and wane have been removed from the side edges of an edged board. An unedged board, in contrast, retains its natural edge.

What moisture content is considered optimal for a furniture-grade board?

For woodworking, particularly furniture manufacturing, the moisture content of the boards should be between 8–12%.

What sizes of edged boards are available in stock?

We have lumber in stock with the following parameters:

  • Thickness: 30 mm, 50 mm / 1.18″, 1.97″;
  • Width: from 20 cm / from 7.87″;
  • Length: 2.2-4.5 m / 86.61″-177.2″.

How should edged lumber be stored correctly?

Lumber should be stored in a dry, ventilated room with a stable temperature and humidity level.

Can edged lumber be used for exterior work?

Yes, hardwoods are used for exterior work. The wood needs to be treated with antiseptics and special protective coatings.

What are the grades of edged lumber?

Edged lumber is classified into three main grades:

  • Grade 1. Practically free of knots, with a uniform texture and color.
  • Grade 2. Allows knots up to 5 mm in diameter, minor surface checks, and color variations.
  • Grade 3. A large number of knots, surface and through-cracks, and uneven coloring.

What is kiln drying of wood and why is it important?

Kiln drying of wood is a controlled process during which the material is dried to an optimal moisture content (8-12%) in special kilns. This drying method ensures the stability and durability of the board.
