Benefits of Sawn Ash Veneer

Sawn veneer, also known as lamella, is lumber produced by sawing a solid piece of wood on special equipment. The thickness of a lamella is usually 2 to 10 mm / 0.078–0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the pattern, color, and texture of the wood.

The material’s benefits include:

  1. Strength and durability. Thanks to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural aesthetic. Sawn veneer preserves the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-friendliness. The thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an effective way to use industrial wood.
  4. Broad application. Sawn veneer is used to create various carpentry products, from furniture facades and parquet flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. The lamellas retain a stable shape and are suitable for use in residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Ease of processing. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and lacquered.

Rustic Grade Sawn Ash Veneer

Rustic-grade sawn veneer has the most natural features. The cost of this material is significantly lower than grades A and B.

Characteristics of rustic-grade sawn veneer:

  • Various types of knots are permitted: live knots, loose knots, black knots, and knots with cracks.
  • Minor cracks and pitch pockets may be present on the surface.
  • There are noticeable color variations.
  • Despite visual imperfections, the material remains strong.

This type of finishing material with pronounced natural wood features is chosen for projects in rustic, loft, chalet, eco, Scandi, and country styles.

Sawn Ash Lamella Manufacturing Technology

The production of sawn veneer is a technological process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of the lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board selection. Boards of the highest or first grade are selected for lamella production.
  2. Wood drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8–10%. Drying with adherence to technology relieves internal wood stress and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Stock calibration. The next stage is calibrating the boards. The material is adjusted to the size of the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for size and quality. After sorting by grade, the lamellas are stacked into bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium cladding material, whose production is focused on quality and the preservation of the wood’s properties.

Uses of Sawn Ash Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Parquet flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered hardwood flooring. The wood sheets make the multi-layered flooring aesthetically pleasing.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used to finish countertops for desks and dining tables, bar tops, kitchen work surfaces, and retail counters.
  • Furniture facades. A lamella finish gives furniture a solid look. It is an optimal choice for cabinets, dressers, tallboys, and chests of drawers. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and is easily stained and lacquered.
  • Indoor stair treads. Thanks to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for cladding stairs. A thickness of 2–10 mm is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and interior partitions. Interoom doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-structural constructions help to zone the space and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall panels. Sawn wood lamellas are used to create wall panels with a unique pattern. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different types of texture.
  • Household and decorative items. Artisans make various small household items from sawn veneer, such as boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, eyeglass stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the basis for a wide range of carpentry products. High-quality cladding material allows for the realization of the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Ash Wood: Characteristics

Ash (Fraxinus) is one of the most valuable hardwood species in Europe. The wood is known for its strength, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal. Ash is a popular material for producing sports equipment, tools, furniture, and flooring. The plant is found throughout Europe, from the UK and southern Scandinavia to the western regions of Ukraine. The tree is common in mixed and deciduous forests.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry ash wood is 660–700 kg/m³.
  • Janka hardness is 1480 lbf, Brinell is 4.
  • Ash has high impact toughness and elasticity. The material is used for making tool handles, baseball bats, bows, and guitars.

Texture, Pattern, and Color

  • Ash grain is straight and even, with a pronounced texture on the cut surface. The annual rings are clearly visible.
  • The sapwood palette consists of light shades: creamy, pale yellow, and light beige. The heartwood color ranges from light brown to grayish-brown, sometimes with olive or black streaks.
  • Ash has large open pores, which are clearly visible on the cuts.

Processing Features

  • When dried in a kiln, the wood dries relatively quickly and becomes stable.
  • Ash is easily worked with both hand and machine tools. Its high toughness minimizes the likelihood of splitting. The solid wood can be sanded, milled, glued, and polished to a smooth surface.
  • Ash, like beech, bends well when exposed to steam. This property is actively used in the production of furniture with curved elements.
  • With proper application technology, the species accepts various types of finishes well, from lacquers and oils to stains.
