Advantages of Cherry Sawn Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is lumber obtained by sawing solid wood with specialized equipment. The thickness of lamella typically ranges from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078-0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the grain, color, and texture of the wood.

The advantages of the material include:

  1. Durability and Longevity. Thanks to its sufficient thickness, lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishes.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer preserves the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendly. The thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to use industrial timber.
  4. Broad Application. Sawn veneer is used to create a variety of woodworking products, from furniture fronts and engineered flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. Lamellas maintain a stable shape and are suitable for use in residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Easy to Work With. Sawn veneer is easily processed. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and varnished.

Grade B Cherry Sawn Veneer

Grade B sawn veneer has a lower price compared to Grade A but retains all the main benefits of sawn veneer.

Characteristics of Grade B lamella:

  • Black knots up to 5 mm / 0.2″ in diameter are allowed on the surface. The number of knots is not strictly regulated, but there is a requirement for their placement. Knots should not be too close to each other or to the edges to avoid reducing the lamella’s strength.
  • Color changes and noticeable tone variations are possible.
  • Natural texture unevenness.

The material is used for projects where aesthetic requirements are not strict or for products where natural features are part of the design.

Technology for Manufacturing Sawn Cherry Lamella

The production of sawn veneer is a technical process that preserves the wood’s texture. The manufacturing of the lumber consists of the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. For lamella production, we select Grade A or B boards.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10%, which is ideal for woodworking. Drying with proper technology relieves internal wood tension and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Stock Preparation. The next stage is preparing the boards. The material is sized to fit the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the specified thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing raw material waste.
  5. Grading. The resulting lumber is checked for size and quality. After being sorted by grade, the lamellas are stacked into bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium cladding material, and its production is focused on quality and preserving the properties of the wood.

Uses for Sawn Cherry Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Engineered Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered flooring. The wood sheets give the multi-layered flooring an aesthetic appeal.
  • Countertops. Lamella is used to finish countertops for writing and dining tables, bar tops, kitchen work surfaces, and retail counters.
  • Furniture Fronts. Lamella cladding gives furniture a solid, high-end look. It is an ideal choice for cabinets, dressers, and chests of drawers. The material is resistant to temperature and humidity fluctuations and can be easily stained and varnished.
  • Stair Treads. Due to its high strength and durability, sawn veneer is a popular material for cladding stairs. A thickness of 2-10 mm is sufficient to withstand the operational load in townhomes, rural houses, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-structural elements help zone a space and often play an important role in the interior design of studio apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Unique wall panels are created from wood lamellas. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to create various small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, glasses stands, key holders, clocks, and more.

Wood lamella is the foundation for a wide range of woodworking products. Quality cladding material makes it possible to realize the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Cherry Wood: Key Parameters

Cherry (Prunus avium) is one of the most valuable species in the furniture industry. The solid wood is prized for its warm reddish-brown palette, expressive texture, and ease of processing. Fine woodworkers consider the timber a symbol of elegance and classic style. European cherry is widespread throughout Europe: from Great Britain and Scandinavia to the Caucasus. The species is also cultivated in North America. Cherry trees grow in deciduous forests, often on the edges.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry wood is approximately 580 kg/m³.
  • The Janka hardness is 1,150 lbf, and the Brinell hardness is 3.2.
  • Cherry has moderate toughness and elasticity, allowing it to withstand mechanical stress.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • Cherry grain is usually straight, and the texture is uniform. Sometimes logs with wavy grain may be found.
  • The sapwood is light, with predominant creamy-white or pinkish hues. The color of the heartwood ranges from light reddish-brown to a rich reddish-brown. Over time, cherry wood darkens when exposed to sunlight.
  • Cherry has small pores. Small knots may be found on the cut surface.

Processing Features

  • Stable wood with a woodworking moisture content of 8-10% is obtained after kiln drying.
  • Thanks to its moderate hardness, this fruitwood is easily processed with hand and power tools. The species is effortlessly sawn, planed, sanded, turned, and cut.
  • Cherry takes well to varnishes, oils, and other finishes that highlight the natural beauty and color of the solid wood.
