Advantages of Cherry Sawn Veneer

Sawn veneer, or lamella, is a type of lumber made by sawing solid wood on specialized equipment. Lamella thickness typically ranges from 2 to 10 mm / 0.078-0.39″. Sawn veneer retains the wood’s grain pattern, color, and texture.

The material’s advantages include:

  1. Strength and Durability. Thanks to its significant thickness, the lamella can withstand mechanical stress and is suitable for various types of finishing.
  2. Natural Aesthetics. Sawn veneer retains the natural beauty of solid wood.
  3. Eco-Friendly. Thin sheets of wood are environmentally safe. Lumber is an efficient way to utilize industrial wood.
  4. Wide Application. Sawn veneer is used to create a variety of millwork, from furniture facades and engineered flooring to wall panels and doors.
  5. Stability. The material is made from kiln-dried solid wood. Lamellas maintain a stable shape and are suitable for use in both residential and commercial spaces.
  6. Easy to Process. Sawn veneer is easy to work with. The sheets can be cut, glued, polished, sanded, painted, stained, and lacquered.

Grade A Cherry Sawn Veneer

Grade classification helps assess the quality and appearance of the lumber. Grade A is the highest quality category.

Features of Grade A sawn veneer:

  • Allows for 2-3 healthy white knots up to 1 cm / 0.39″ in diameter per linear meter / 39.37″.
  • Uniform, straight grain.
  • Minor natural variations in color are possible.

This veneer is ideal for creating premium products where a flawless appearance is essential.

The Manufacturing Process for Cherry Sawn Lamella

Sawn veneer production is a technical process that preserves the wood’s texture. The lumber is made in the following stages:

  1. Board Selection. Grade A or B boards are chosen for lamella production.
  2. Wood Drying. The selected boards are dried in special kilns. Kiln drying produces solid wood with a stable moisture content of 8-10%. Drying following the correct procedure relieves internal wood tension and prevents lumber deformation.
  3. Workpiece Calibration. The next step is calibrating the boards. The material is adjusted to fit the saw cassette.
  4. Sawing. After jointing, the boards are loaded into a Wintersteiger machine and cut into sheets of the required thickness. Modern equipment ensures maximum cutting precision, minimizing material waste.
  5. Sorting. The resulting lumber is checked for size and quality. After grade sorting, the lamella is stacked into bundles.

Sawn veneer is a premium cladding material whose production focuses on quality and preserving the wood’s properties.

Uses for Cherry Sawn Lamella

Sawn veneer is a strong, durable, and easy-to-work-with type of lumber. Veneer sheets are used to create products such as:

  • Engineered Flooring. Sawn veneer is used for the top layer of engineered flooring. The wood sheets give multi-layer flooring an aesthetic appeal.
  • Countertops. Lamellas are used for surfacing writing desks, dining tables, bar tops, kitchen work surfaces, and retail counters.
  • Furniture Facades. Lamella cladding gives furniture a solid look. It’s an excellent choice for cabinets, dressers, tall storage units, and chests. The material is resistant to temperature and moisture fluctuations and can be easily stained and lacquered.
  • Stair Treads. Thanks to its high strength and wear resistance, sawn veneer is a popular material for cladding stairs. A thickness of 2-10 mm is sufficient to withstand operational loads in townhouses, country homes, hotels, and restaurants.
  • Doors and Interior Partitions. Interior doors finished with sawn veneer are chosen for both residential and commercial spaces. Lamellas are used to decorate partitions, dividers, and screens. Non-structural elements help zone a space and often play an important role in the interior design of smart apartments, offices, and exhibition halls.
  • Wall Panels. Wooden lamellas are used to create wall panels with a unique grain pattern. Veneer sheets can be combined in various ways to achieve a uniform surface or a highly decorative panel with different textures.
  • Household and Decorative Items. Craftsmen use sawn veneer to make various small household items: boxes, organizers, lamps, mirror frames, figurines, napkin holders, eyeglass stands, key holders, clocks, etc.

Wood lamella is the foundation for various millwork products. High-quality cladding material allows for the realization of the most complex design ideas. Sawn veneer is used where not only the beauty of the wood is needed, but also durability and resistance to mechanical stress.

Cherry Wood: Key Parameters

Cherry (Prunus avium) is one of the most valuable species in the furniture industry. The solid wood is prized for its warm reddish-brown color, expressive texture, and ease of processing. Master woodworkers consider the wood a symbol of elegance and classic style. European cherry is widespread throughout Europe, from the UK and Scandinavia to the Caucasus. The species is also cultivated in North America. Cherry grows in deciduous forests, often at the edges.

Technical Characteristics

  • The average density of dry wood is approximately 580 kg/m³.
  • Its Janka hardness is 1,150 lbf, and its Brinell hardness is 3.2.
  • Cherry has moderate toughness and elasticity, allowing it to withstand mechanical stress.

Texture, Grain, and Color

  • Cherry fibers are usually straight, and the texture is uniform. Sometimes logs with wavy grain can be found.
  • The sapwood is light, predominantly creamy white or pinkish. The heartwood color ranges from light reddish-brown to a rich reddish-brown. Over time, cherry wood darkens under the influence of sunlight.
  • Cherry has small pores. Small knots may be found on the cut surface.

Processing Features

  • Stable wood with a joinery moisture content of 8-10% is obtained after kiln drying.
  • Thanks to its moderate hardness, this fruitwood is easily worked with both hand and machine tools. The species is easily sawn, planed, sanded, turned, and cut.
  • Cherry accepts lacquers, oils, and other finishing coats well, which accentuate the natural beauty and color of the solid wood.
