Characteristics of Grade 2 (B) Spruce Furniture Panels

In the context of finger-jointed spruce furniture panels, Grade 2 is determined by the visual characteristics of the surfaces, not by strength parameters. All panels are manufactured using the same technology and possess high strength. Grade 2 (B) furniture panels have certain characteristics related to the presence of natural wood defects. On the panel surface:

  • Black knots up to 5 mm are permitted.
  • Variations in the color of the lamellas and a lack of perfect matching in pattern and tone are possible.
  • Minor gluing defects that do not affect the material’s performance are permitted.
  • Sapwood (up to 20%) may be present.

Production Technology of Finger-Jointed Spruce Furniture Panels

  • Wood Drying. The lamellas are made from kiln-dried boards with a moisture content of 8-10%, which ensures the material’s stability.
  • Cutting the Lamellas. The wood is sawn into staves of a specific thickness and width. Modern machinery guarantees precise dimensions for each segment.
  • Sorting. The finished lamellas are sorted by quality and size, and staves with defects are removed.
  • Milling the Finger Joint. A special interlocking joint—the finger joint—is formed on the ends of the lamellas to ensure maximum gluing surface area.
  • Joining the Segments. The lamellas are glued together lengthwise and widthwise under a press using environmentally friendly adhesives that meet strength and safety standards.
  • Calibration and Sanding. The finished panel is calibrated to the required dimensions and sanded to prepare the surface for further finishing.

Advantages of Spruce Furniture Panels Over Solid Wood

  1. Stability. The wooden lamellas are made from boards dried to an optimal moisture level (8-10%). Kiln drying the wood eliminates internal stresses, which cause warping in solid timber. Therefore, a finger-jointed panel is not prone to warping or cracking due to fluctuations in humidity and temperature.
  2. Structural Homogeneity. The finger-jointing process allows to create a uniform surface free of defects.
  3. Durability. The load is distributed evenly across the material’s surface. The structure of multi-directional segments disperses point stresses and prevents pressure from concentrating in one area. As a result, the panel maintains its integrity even under significant loads.
  4. Optimal Use of Raw Materials. The finger-jointing technology allows for the efficient use of wood, minimizing waste and making production more effective and environmentally friendly.
  5. Aesthetics. The wooden lamellas that make up the panel retain the texture of the wood. The finger-jointing process creates a parquet-like pattern that can be an interesting design element.

Applications of Spruce Furniture Panels

This strong and stable material is used to create products such as:

  • countertops for desks, kitchen workstations, and bar counters;
  • treads for interior stairs;
  • furniture fronts: doors for cabinets, dressers, nightstands, and tall cabinets;
  • headboards for beds;
  • seats for bar stools, benches, and stools;
  • windowsills in homes and offices;
  • decorative wall panels.

Spruce (Fir) Wood: Characteristics and Features

Spruce (Picea abies), also known as Norway spruce or European spruce, is one of the most popular softwood species in Europe. The solid wood has a uniform light-yellow or creamy-white color with a subtle sheen. The texture is fine, and the grain is straight.

Thanks to its low density (approximately 450–470 kg/m³), the wood is lightweight and easy to work with: it glues, saws, mills, stains, and lacquers well. The Brinell hardness rating is 1.6. Its uniform color provides an excellent base for any stain or paint. Special treatments are used to protect the solid wood from biological damage.
