Cherry Wood: Characteristics

Cherry (Prunus avium) is a valuable hardwood species that cabinetmakers call the epitome of elegance. Thanks to its interesting texture and warm color palette, this fruitwood is typically used to create pieces with a traditional aesthetic.

1 58

Key Characteristics of Cherry Wood

  • Dry wood has an average density of 580-640 kg/m³. Its Janka hardness is 1150 lbf. According to the Brinell classification, its hardness is 3.1–3.4.
  • Cherry wood has high elasticity, which minimizes the risk of splitting when drilling and sawing. The solid wood bends well after steaming, making it suitable for producing curved furniture elements.

Visual Qualities of Cherry

  • The sapwood is a creamy or yellowish color. The heartwood is distinguished by a rich, reddish-brown color that darkens over time with exposure to light.
  • The wood has a fine and uniform grain. The fibers are straight, but a wavy or curly texture sometimes occurs. Cherry has a natural silky luster. Small knots and medullary rays add character to the surface.

Workability

  • The solid wood is easy to cut, plane, glue, sand, and rout. Thanks to its uniform grain, craftsmen can achieve a perfectly smooth surface.
  • Cherry accepts stains, lacquers, and oils well. This allows for enhancing its natural color and unique texture, which is especially valued in the production of high-quality furniture.

Features of Grade 3 (Rustic) Edged Cherry Lumber

Grade 3 edged lumber is the most affordable option, used for technical applications or projects with a rustic aesthetic.

Key characteristics of Grade 3 edged boards:

  • A higher number of knots compared to higher-grade lumber. Knots of various types are permitted: sound, intergrown, loose, and black. Size and location are not restricted.
  • Surface and through cracks up to 1.5-2 mm wide and up to ⅓ of the board’s length are allowed.
  • Any color variations, including dark spots, may be present.
  • Wormholes, resin pockets, and mechanical damage that do not affect structural integrity may be present.

What is Edged Cherry Lumber?

Edged lumber is a sawn timber product from which the bark and wane on the side edges have been removed. High-quality logs are selected for the production of edged lumber. The raw material is sawn into boards, taking into account the direction of the grain and the required thickness and length. The blanks then pass through machines where bark residue is removed and straight edges are formed. The moisture content of the wood is brought to an optimal level of 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry boards for woodworking are then sorted by grade: color, grain structure, and the number and type of knots are assessed.

How Does Kiln Drying of Boards Work?

Our stock program features kiln-dried edged lumber. Kiln drying of wood is a high-tech and controlled process. Unlike air drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees stable, uniformly dried material with an optimal woodworking moisture content of 8-12%.

2 58

The main stages of drying wood in special kilns:

  1. Loading the Lumber. Boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows to allow for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly used for hardwoods, such as oak or beech. Steam treatment opens the pores and equalizes the moisture content, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity of the air inside the kiln are computer-controlled and change according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors constantly monitor the condition of the wood. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final Conditioning and Cooling. To relieve internal stresses, the dried lumber is treated with steam. The boards are then gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient temperature (approximately 35–45 °C) to avoid condensation.

Kiln-dried edged lumber is ideally suited for the production of furniture, doors, and other interior elements. Wood at this moisture level is stable, strong, and ready for further processing.

Advantages of Edged Cherry Lumber

  1. Versatility of Application. The material is suitable for both mass production of furniture and individual craft projects.
  2. Stability. Kiln drying results in uniformly dried and stable solid boards that are ready for further mechanical processing.
  3. Waste Reduction and Economic Benefit. High-quality primary processing of the lumber reduces waste and increases the raw material utilization rate. This means you only pay for the usable volume of material, which is especially important in mass production.
  4. Optimization of Production Processes. Lumber with pre-processed side edges reduces cutting time and optimizes production processes. Edged lumber is easy to plane, rout, sand, stain, lacquer, and paint.
  5. Convenience of Logistics and Storage. Thanks to their regular shape, the boards are easy to stack, which saves warehouse space, simplifies transportation, and reduces logistics costs.

Uses of Edged Cherry Lumber

Edged lumber is one of the most popular timber products in the woodworking industry. Below are the areas where this natural material is actively used.

3 51

Furniture Manufacturing

Edged lumber is used in the production of bodies and fronts for cabinets, dressers, and nightstands, as well as tables, chairs, beds, ottomans, and benches. Wooden furniture can be stained to logically fit into various design styles.

Construction and Finishing

Lumber products are used as structural and finishing materials. Boards are used to create decking, flooring (parquet, parquet boards, and tongue-and-groove boards), wall panels, non-load-bearing walls, and interior stairs.

Door and Window Manufacturing

Thanks to its stability and ease of processing, edged lumber is used in the manufacturing of interior doors, window frames, casings, and sills.

Craft and Designer Projects

For workshops that create unique products, edged lumber opens up wide possibilities. Woodworkers produce custom-made exclusive furniture, interior panels, room dividers and screens, and various interior decor items.

FAQ: Frequently Asked Questions

What species of edged lumber are available for order?

We offer boards from over 10 species. Hardwoods: European Oak, Red Oak, Ash, Alder, European Walnut, Black Locust, Beech, Hornbeam, Elm, Maple, Cherry. Softwoods: Pine, Spruce.

What is the minimum order?

The minimum order volume for lumber is 1 container.

What are the delivery times?

Delivery times for lumber products depend on the supply volume and destination. Estimated time is 4-8 weeks.

How are the boards packaged for transport?

The edged boards are hermetically sealed in film for safe sea transport.

What is an edged board and how does it differ from an unedged board?

An edged board has the bark and wane removed from its side edges. An unedged board, in contrast, retains its natural edge.

What is considered the optimal moisture content for woodworking lumber?

For woodworking, particularly furniture production, the moisture content of the boards should be within the 8–12% range.

What sizes of edged boards are available in stock?

We have lumber with the following parameters in stock:

  • thickness: 30 mm, 50 mm / 1.18″, 1.97″;
  • width: from 20 cm / from 7.87″;
  • length: 2.2-4.5 m / 86.61″-177.2″.

How should edged lumber be stored correctly?

Lumber should be stored in a dry, ventilated room with a stable temperature and humidity level.

Can edged lumber be used for exterior work?

Yes, hardwoods are used for exterior work. The wood must be treated with antiseptics and special protective coatings.

What are the grades of edged lumber?

Edged lumber is classified into three main grades:

  • Grade 1. Practically free of knots, with a uniform texture and color.
  • Grade 2. Allows for knots up to 5 mm in diameter, minor surface cracks, and color variations.
  • Grade 3. A large number of knots, surface and through cracks, and uneven coloring.

What is kiln drying of wood and why is it important?

Kiln drying is a controlled process in which wood is dried to an optimal moisture content (8-12%) in special chambers. This drying method ensures the stability and durability of the board.
