European oak (Quercus robur) is a valuable hardwood species widespread in the temperate latitudes of Europe. Understanding the technical and aesthetic properties of oak wood allows for effective work with the material and the creation of high-quality and practical products.

Technical Parameters of Oak Wood

  • The average density of dry oak wood is approximately 690-750 kg/m³. On the Janka hardness scale, the rating is 1120 lbf, and on the Brinell scale, it is 3.7. This indicates high resistance to wear, impacts, and scratches.
  • Oak wood has moderate viscosity and flexibility. The species is not as pliable for bending as, for example, ash, but after special steam treatment, it can also be bent. This property allows for the creation of curved furniture and decor elements.

Visual and Aesthetic Characteristics of Oak Wood

  • The sapwood has a light yellow or almost white hue. The heartwood color varies from pale yellow to light brown. Over time, under the influence of light, oak wood acquires darker shades.
  • The oak texture is distinct and coarse. The wood typically has straight grain. Wavy patterns and knots may be present. Figured grain is not typical for oak.

Features of Oak Processing

Working with hardwood requires experience. The species is suitable for various types of processing: sawing, milling, and drilling. Thanks to its dense structure, the material holds fasteners, ensuring the reliability of constructions.

Oak glues without a problem, but to achieve maximum bond strength, it is recommended to use special adhesives for hardwoods. The wood accepts stains, oils, and varnishes well. This allows craftsmen to emphasize the natural grain or give the material the desired shade.

Features of Grade 1 Oak Sawn Boards

Grade 1 sawn boards are used in furniture production, carpentry, interior finishing, and other products where operational and aesthetic qualities are important.

Key characteristics of Grade 1 sawn boards:

  • Healthy knots with a diameter up to 1 cm (0.39″) are allowed, with 2-3 knots per linear meter (39.37″).
  • The wood grain is uniform, and the fibers are straight.
  • Minor natural color variations are possible.

What is an Oak Sawn Board?

A sawn board is lumber from which the bark and wane have been trimmed from the side edges. High-quality logs are chosen to produce sawn boards. The raw material is sawn into boards, considering the grain direction and the required thickness and length. The blanks then pass through machines that remove any remaining bark and form straight edges. The wood’s moisture content is brought to an optimal level of 8-12% in drying kilns. The dry carpentry boards are then sorted by grade: they are evaluated for color, grain structure, and the number and type of knots, among other things.

How Does Kiln Drying of Boards Work?

Our stock program includes kiln-dried sawn boards. Kiln drying of wood is a high-tech and controlled process. Unlike natural drying, this method is significantly faster and guarantees a stable and uniformly dried material with an optimal carpentry moisture content of 8-12%.

The main stages of wood drying in special kilns:

  1. Loading the lumber. The boards are stacked in special drying kilns. Gaps are left between the rows for free air circulation.
  2. Preparation (Steaming). In the initial stage, the wood may be treated with steam. This procedure is mainly applied to hardwoods, such as oak or beech. Steaming opens the pores and evens out the moisture, reducing the risk of cracks and internal stresses.
  3. Main Drying. The kilns are equipped with a heating and ventilation system. The temperature and humidity of the air inside the kiln are controlled by a computer and change according to a set program depending on the wood species, board thickness, and initial moisture level.
  4. Monitoring. Moisture meters and sensors continuously monitor the condition of the wood. Drying continues until the material reaches the optimal working moisture content of 8–12%.
  5. Final conditioning and cooling. To relieve internal stresses, dry wood is treated with steam. The boards are then gradually cooled to a temperature close to the ambient environment (approximately 35–45 °C) to avoid condensation.

Kiln-dried sawn boards are optimally suited for the production of furniture, doors, and other interior elements. Wood with a carpentry moisture content is stable, durable, and ready for further processing.

Quality control is carried out in three stages:

Raw material selection and inspection. We assess the quality of the wood, its grade, grain structure, and compliance with technical requirements.

First production batch inspection. Once production begins, we inspect the first units to ensure proper process execution and consistent parameters.

Final inspection during packaging. Before shipment, we check moisture content, dimensions, surface finish quality, and overall compliance with the approved specification.

This approach ensures consistent quality for every batch and full transparency throughout the entire production process.

Packaging and Transportation

Truck and rail transport

Packaging. Products are palletized on kiln-dried lumber pallets to ensure stability, ventilation, and preservation of the geometry and quality of wood materials.

Protective wrapping. Materials are sealed off from the external environment. Pallets are wrapped in multi-layer moisture-resistant shrink film. The film is tightly secured around the cargo, creating an airtight barrier and additional cushioning during truck and rail transport.

Board sheathing. The top and sides of the cargo are additionally protected with MDF, fiberboard, or plywood sheets. This sheathing stabilizes the batch and prevents crushing, scratching, and warping during loading and unloading.

Strapping. Pallets are secured with strapping bands to prevent product shifting during transit.

Ocean freight (container shipping)

Reinforced packaging. In compliance with international standards, we use heat-protected and moisture-resistant packaging with reinforced fasteners for ocean container shipments.

In-container securing. Specialized fasteners, strapping, and dunnage bags are used to prevent cargo movement caused by vessel rolling.

Additional product protection. When necessary, desiccants, interleaving pads, and multi-layer films are applied.

Payments are made in accordance with the terms specified in the signed contract.
